Playing Destiny Under Age

Although this is an old, already discussed problem, I believe that we can still change. I feel that the majority of players that play Destiny are under the appropriate age for shooters. I think this age should be 18 and over. I'll give you a few reasons. 1)It causes traumatic situations. I for one do not want my child flinching and screaming away every time they see somebody holding a sword. 2) It causes anti-social instincts to grow. When you think about it, the average session a child will play in Destiny is three to four hours. That's three to four hours where the only communication the are getting is with people they have met over the Internet. I don't want children growing older and being scared of every person they see. 3) It teaches them bad words. Every lobby I go into, there is always that person (usually a child) screaming curse words for no good reason. Where did they find out these words? From older players. If there was a minimum age, you would not have this problem. Children are getting angrier because of this game. 4) My final reason is that it causes violence. No 10 year old should be able to make another creatures head explode, or shoot other players virtually. What happens when that transfers to the real world? That anger and frustration would lead to much property being desecrated including Mailbox Baseball Laser Tag TPing Houses Egging Cars Multiple holes in the wall from being punched. ANY PERSON who do not follow these rules should be arrested with a minimum 2 year sentence. Thank you all for the support you give me. I believe that a change to only 18 year olds and over would make the worlds youth safer and more intelligent than currently.

  • You're saying, yeah a ten year old or eleven year old so so shouldn't be exposed to violence and bad words in video games, yes true. But you have too realize kids over 12-13 are surprising mature enough for things in video games and you have to realize that there's not much violence in destiny. No bad words or anything, the most violent thing you'll find in destiny is, well, guns. And there are guns in most games to date. If it's that you don't want to play with minors, well that's different. You say you don't want kids to be exposed to bad words and violence, but as I stated, destiny doesn't have really any of either of those, so where to these practices begin? Maybe the other players, the community not understanding what they should say around a child? I'm not sure. But yeah, the whole prison thing, I hope, is a joke, and is out of terms in the first place.

  • That last reason is saying Metalheads are the cause of violence during the 80's when it was a strong music movement. It's just untrue when you look into the broad spectrum, but I'm sure you can find headlines that make it seem factual.

I don't have a problem with the rating for the game or the age of the players playing, and an age limit wouldn't change anything because age can be falsified or younger players could have mom/dad/older sibling, etc., set the account for them. The only thing I would have a problem with in this regard is the parents who don't know what they're getting for their child. You better believe that before I buy video games for my kids, I will know exactly what content is in those games and exactly what the online community is like before they'll be able to play them. My parents always did that for me. Not to mention the fact that my dad always played the games with us (Still does for that matter, plays Destiny at age 60! Look up The Old Guy and see it for yourself lol) and I'm already playing video games with my kids too. My kids are 6, 5, and 4. They play Disney Infinity and stuff like that, but they enjoy watching me play Destiny or Halo. The very first thing I did from the moment they were around me while I was playing is have a conversation with them about what's real and what's not, what's allowed in real life and what's not, etc. My kids understand explicitly that Destiny is just a game and the stuff that you do in the game you are NEVER allowed to do in real life. And I repeat those lessons to them on a regular basis. Honestly, half the social issues we have in America would be fixed if all parents made a DELIBERATE and CONSISTENT effort to communicate with and educate their own kids. It's the absentee parents that result in the litte kids on Destiny you're describing.

            • I agree with you, when I join any lobby for any game (mainly crucible though) there is always someone who swears a lot and there could be an underaged player who has learnt a new word that could possibly get excluded from school (racism or other bad words) so you are right in what you are saying. Most of the rage though is from crucible with felwinters cough.sniper.cough, or thorn cough.ScoutRifle.cough :)

                        • I see your point and I agree, but arresting every single kid who plays a mature video game is like putting most gaming companies out of business. That's a huge portion of their fan base, not to mention profit. It depends on the parents of the child and the maturity of the child. I myself am 14, I don't want to be arrested for playing a game that I love just as much as you do. I usually play with people I know in real life, so it's not like I'M being antisocial. Thoughts?

                          • I've seen both ends of the spectrum and it comes down to maturity. I've seen kids cry over there own stupid decisions (forgot to switch characters at atheon), but if it's a 12 year old who just wants to have fun and play with friends there is no reason to make it a blanket statement.

Jail time for buying a game? Focus on the maturity of the child, and don't think of arresting every one under 18 for playing video games. The internet will rise against you and would you really arrest a 12 year old for playing mario or wipeout kinect edition? Besides, i learned words (big smart words used at college or above levels) from video games when i was a kid.
