Playing Destiny Under Age

Although this is an old, already discussed problem, I believe that we can still change. I feel that the majority of players that play Destiny are under the appropriate age for shooters. I think this age should be 18 and over. I'll give you a few reasons. 1)It causes traumatic situations. I for one do not want my child flinching and screaming away every time they see somebody holding a sword. 2) It causes anti-social instincts to grow. When you think about it, the average session a child will play in Destiny is three to four hours. That's three to four hours where the only communication the are getting is with people they have met over the Internet. I don't want children growing older and being scared of every person they see. 3) It teaches them bad words. Every lobby I go into, there is always that person (usually a child) screaming curse words for no good reason. Where did they find out these words? From older players. If there was a minimum age, you would not have this problem. Children are getting angrier because of this game. 4) My final reason is that it causes violence. No 10 year old should be able to make another creatures head explode, or shoot other players virtually. What happens when that transfers to the real world? That anger and frustration would lead to much property being desecrated including Mailbox Baseball Laser Tag TPing Houses Egging Cars Multiple holes in the wall from being punched. ANY PERSON who do not follow these rules should be arrested with a minimum 2 year sentence. Thank you all for the support you give me. I believe that a change to only 18 year olds and over would make the worlds youth safer and more intelligent than currently.

As long as the parents allow it, you can play it. Tell your son to make his own party or mute everyone else. Also, why are you complaining when you haven't even tested your theory? I bet you that if my son played destiny he would be able to have more things in common with others, resulting in him being more social.

  • I'm 15 and have played multiple CoD, Battlefield, Skyrim, Diablo, Halo, Metro Last Light, Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed, Destiny and I hope to play a lot of Fallout 4. I have enjoyed all of these games in their own way and I know enough not to punch walls or think about killing real people. I have also played more mello games like Terraria and Minecraft and I enjoy those games immensely as well. It isn't the age as much as it is the maturity of who's playing the game.

          • So basically your saying. Me a 16 year Old Student shouldn't be allowed to play a game that is rated by PEGI as 16? If you were to actually look on the back of the Destiny cases it says that it SUPPORTS FAMILY SETTINGS (Such as time lock etc)

This sounds like #Satire, but there are so many stupid people in the world, I'm just going to assume it isn't, since you don't have the tag, and have said you aren't kidding in reply to other posts. 1. Lol wut. In what situation in life would someone be holding a sword? A movie? In real life, they probably better damn be flinching away, the mother-blam!-er got a -blam!-ing sword. 2. Friends on the internet are no different from friends in real life, other than they may not know what they look like. Can it be dangerous? Yes. But as long as they aren't an idiot, it will be fine. Also, unless you live in the middle of no where, your child should be in school and interacting with people all the time. 3. They are just words. "Oh no, he said Shit! Arrest him! Shun him! SLAY THY CHILD WHO SPEAKS THE WORDS WHICH ARE DEEMED BAD BY OUR SOCIETY" They will learn them anyway. They won't be kids forever. Obviously there are situations where words should not be used, but that is your responsibility as a parent to teach them not to use them. 4. Multiple studies have shown that video games do not cause violence, but there was already something not right in the head about that person. If anything, it should prevent violence, because they have a way to get the violence out of their system without actually hurting anyone. Laser tag? Really? Now I know this post is satire. Arrested with a minimum 2 year sentence. Yes. That is how we prevent violence. Put people in prison! I swear if this post isn't satire or written in a sarcastic way, I actually might hit my head on a wall until a knock myself out. When I come to, I'll do it again.
1)It causes traumatic situations. I for one do not want my child flinching and screaming away every time they see somebody holding a sword.
Do you really think that video games can cause a PTSD type problem? Even assuming we kill all logical thought processes here, how often do you come across people wielding swords in your everyday life? Wouldn't it be a good reaction to avoid a person with a sword in a non controlled environment?
2) It causes anti-social instincts to grow. When you think about it, the average session a child will play in Destiny is three to four hours. That's three two for hours where the only communication the are getting is with people they have met over the Internet. I don't want children growing older and being scared of every person they see.
Seriously? Destiny is a very social game, most FPS games are designed to play with other people, on a team. Learn how to work together for the greater goal of winning the match. It is also a hobby, which brings people together. If you have shared interests with other people you are more likely to make friends. Personally, I met my closest friend because of Halo 3. We have known each other around 8 years.
3) It teaches them bad words. Every lobby I go into, there is always that person (usually a child) screaming curse words for no good reason. Where did they find out these words? From older players. If there was a minimum age, you would not have this problem. Children are getting angrier because of this game.
This would not be exclusive to any genre. "Online interactions are not rated by the ESRB." You'd have to keep them off any online function of you didn't want this. Children learn bad words from other children. One often hears their parents say it and then goes to say it at school. Educating your own kids on when to not say these words is your responsibility as a parent. If they spout them off and you don't want them to then it is your fault you didn't educate them well enough.
This argument has been brought up many times and never seems to hold any ground. Most studies that even find links to video games and violence are more related to the fact that more violent people tend to like more violent video games.
ANY PERSON who do not follow these rules should be arrested with a minimum 2 year sentence. Thank you all for the support you give me. I believe that a change to only 18 year olds and over would make the worlds youth safer and more intelligent than currently.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that there is no way yore serious. And once I read that you believe cutting the age at 18 would make it more intelligent, that was the tip over. I'm looking forward to reading the comments.

                • I honestly dont know if you are serious or this is satire.... i hope for the latter. 1) These situations are highly subjective and cant be generalized. Every child reacts differently to these situations. Yes there are images and situations that are not appropiate for children (excessive violence, sexual content etc.) but you cant find them anywhere in Destiny. Yes there are some exploding heads but these are clearly dehumanized aliens and the violence in Destiny is very "clean" (no blood, no horror scenes etc.) 2) Sooooooo communicating with others via the internet is antisocial? Playing with others and having fun together? I dont get it... (fyi: that was sarcasm) Destiny is a multiplayer game where you play with other players, form parties and you can even organize yourself in clans. This is in fact very social. Yes relationships that were bond over the internet can be seen as less valuable as relationships that you have in real life. If you dont want your kids to play videogames the whole day you can always give them time constraints and stuff like that. 3) Dont blame the game, blame the community. And if your children are learning bad words (like they do in school (from their friends), while watching TV, listening to music, are on the internet in general) and you dont like it, talk with them why those words are bad and why they should not use it. 4) *facepalm* Seriously? This again? There is no evidence that videogame violence affects the tendency to violence in the real life. Yes videogames affect your thinking (like every medium (TV, music, art etc.)) and it can be positive and negative. Im not saying that there should be 5 year olds playing games like Splatterhouse, Dead Island, Dead Space or ultraviolent games. Same goes for sexual content and drug abuse (in short: "bad stuff"). And im a big fan of age control on video games (ESRB, PEGI, USK etc.) if they are good and they look at the games closely, but this is a whole other story. In the case of Destiny: Again, Destiny is a science fiction shooter that plays in a far away future. you are killing dehumanized aliens with "clean" violence (see point 1). The game is far enough away from the reality for the normal human beeing to differentiate between Destiny and the real world. Small children CAN have problems with that. But it is the task of the parents to control their children and to talk about it with their children. Videogames can support violence tendencies but that is the case with every other art form. There were people slashing paintings because they were disturbed, there were suicides/homicides because of books (The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe or The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger). That is nothing new. TL:DR: Stop blaming videogames, start talking with your children. You have the duty to protect them and to educate them. If you cant, dont blame others and get help (teachers, social workers etc.).

                  • My whole thing which games and violence and sex is that you will see it anywhere else not just in a game. You can turn on the news and see dead bodies and war. You can walk in on your parents doing the deed and experience something your not quite ready for. It's life. Stuff happens

                        • 2 years of imprisonment? Wouldn't they just say "hey, don't play this" and be done with it? You were wrong about the anti-social aspect of playing mature games. Destiny helps with communication and teamwork. I'm 14 and going into high school after summer. I've been playing mature games for as long as I can remember. I turned out to be a nice person who gets A's in school all the time, and if I don't have plans, I'll play video games all day (except exercise though).

                            • look, I'm 12 dude, and this is my first fps, 1 it's not any more traumatizing then when me and my friends used to play war when we were 8, or fight with out Pokemon. I'm a SUPER fragile guy, so much the I jumped the first time a drag shot me, if anything this game has made me less scared of the world 2 anti social? really? first of all, one of my friends got me to get this game, I got it, some of my friends got it, now at least 6 of us have it, we're always it party's, talking to each other, crucible, talking about xur and the raids, the best three (me Aqua642 and strallypop) usually raid together, and we can only do normal Croat by ourselves, we learned how to used LFG, and that is almost that is definitely NOT anti social 3 bad words? sorry man but we live in a world where your gonna hear them, just about where ever you go, and trust me, I know my 12 year old opinion on this won't convince you, but trying to shelter people (especially kids) from stuff only grows the addiction. + most of us were definitely not introduced To FOUL LANGUAGE by this game and the people we play with. If they swear to much, we might leave the team worlds not all pretty in pink 4 violence, can't fight this one as well as the others, all I want is credit where credit is due, a game like destiny, 1 game where u shot aliens, isn't enough to to make someone become a mass murder, we know, in life, we don't have respawns. the only time I'll ever pick up a gun, is a a Greg has his shock pistol locked on my chest. thank you

Lol. Not sure if you are serious. As a parent, all I can say is that I will use my best judgment. If you agree or disagree with that judgment that's your call (there arguments to be made for both sides) But please refrain from using didactic over tones and simple analogies to frame a complex issue in the gaming community. EDIT: just read over my response and realized its a bit... Prickish in tone. Sorry about that. Also, if any fellow players do run across squeekers please be patient. Some of them are actually not very annoying and have a degree of respect when speaking to others (not all but some).
