Playing Destiny Under Age

Although this is an old, already discussed problem, I believe that we can still change. I feel that the majority of players that play Destiny are under the appropriate age for shooters. I think this age should be 18 and over. I'll give you a few reasons. 1)It causes traumatic situations. I for one do not want my child flinching and screaming away every time they see somebody holding a sword. 2) It causes anti-social instincts to grow. When you think about it, the average session a child will play in Destiny is three to four hours. That's three to four hours where the only communication the are getting is with people they have met over the Internet. I don't want children growing older and being scared of every person they see. 3) It teaches them bad words. Every lobby I go into, there is always that person (usually a child) screaming curse words for no good reason. Where did they find out these words? From older players. If there was a minimum age, you would not have this problem. Children are getting angrier because of this game. 4) My final reason is that it causes violence. No 10 year old should be able to make another creatures head explode, or shoot other players virtually. What happens when that transfers to the real world? That anger and frustration would lead to much property being desecrated including Mailbox Baseball Laser Tag TPing Houses Egging Cars Multiple holes in the wall from being punched. ANY PERSON who do not follow these rules should be arrested with a minimum 2 year sentence. Thank you all for the support you give me. I believe that a change to only 18 year olds and over would make the worlds youth safer and more intelligent than currently.

  • I mostly agree with you, although putting a letter on the corner of a case isn't going to phase most parents. For example, I knew some kindergarteners that played some of the older Grand Theft Auto games, so clearly the parents were not noticing the "M 17+ for use of Drugs and Alchohol, Language, Partial Nudity" etc...

  • Funny you should say that. I played gears of war at 13/14, I remember gleefully giggling as I chainsawed locust and cog into little pieces all night long. Guess where I ended up? Oh, I'm a graphic designer, great friends, fantastic social life, and I've never once considered defacing or damaging another's property or being. I can tell you, it's not the game, it's the person. Anyone of any age can develop anti social tendencies, or a violent/abusive temperament. If you think your kid is gonna turn out like that, then you need to do more than just block video games. Start looking at their social activities, the people they talk to, the way they behave. If I see a kid egging someone's house, I definitely don't think "well, he's clearly played too much Destiny, all those thrall must be having such an adverse effect on him!"

      • What package of bullshit. Why do so many people, as adults, put their kids isolate against what they themself do enjoy? If you don't like violent games, stop playing them yourself. Also the point about violence is invalid. No study shows any correlation between consupmtion of violent games and increased violence in real life.

        • In my opinion the problem is not the age limit. The problem is that many parents park their sons and daughters in front of a television.

        • It teaches them bad words lol what an idiot. Kids are subjected to this stuff more outside of games than in. It's 2015 grandpa get with the times. Pretty much only adults should be able to play games is what your saying. Gtfo the forum scrub

            • I'm guessing from number 3 that you're on XBox, right? Also, I completely agree with your underlying premise but I think 18+ is too strict. Parents need educating and need to take responsibility for their kids' gaming habits (and probably a whole ton of other aspects of their growth). And while everyone is banging on about studies proving this and that, bear in mind they all assumed the games were being used in an age appropriate manner. You can you honestly tell me you'd be ok with your kid/baby brother/sister playing something like Manhunt at 6 years old?

                • Whilst you make a number of excellent points, I think the T for Teen rating is fine. That of course means anyone under 13 should not be playing, but this is another subject. Devils advocate- Whilst the game is full of shooting things and blowing things up and punching things, this is all fantasy violence. I have never seen a four-armed person, or a giant glowing robot that can stop time. Most of what we "kill" in this game bears no resemblance to anything we might see whilst going about our day. Swearing/profanity-there is no cursing in Destiny. Kids learn to curse in school by and large, not videogame lobbies. You can't avoid this, you simply instill in your children that use of profanity around adults/peers/people who might care results in disciplinary action. If you're worried your child might grow up scared of anyone with a sword (by virtue of playing a videogame), it's likely they'll be scared of a sword in any context. My neice is scared of her own shadow, because reasons, not because she's been scared BY a shadow at some point. To qualify your suggestions - Dumbing down of content to appeal to a younger audience. Can't argue against that. Playing violent videogames makes children more likely to grow up committing violence or believing it's ok. I think the small slice of society more susceptible to being influenced by violent games/tv etc would find a way anyway, but all this digital content does make it easier for them to explore their tendencies, and lends weight to the theory. Listening to heavy metal does not turn you into a sociopathic killer with satanic tendencies. I grew up with Dungeons and Dragons, LARP, medieval re-enactment, Warhammer and of course violent videogames and horror/fantasy movies. I consider myself a normal, well adjusted fully functioning member of society who has in no way suffered from exposure to these things and still does not 31 years later (I was playing D&D and videogames when I was 9; I'm now 40). Not arguing with you, just trying to provide balance.

Wait what? I don't have a single one of those, I am above age for destiny but I'm under 18. I play games like GTA all the time, and its fun as hell. Only reason I cuss is through what I've learned in college classes, swearing=more emotion. I don't go around -blam!-ing massacring the streets. Anti-social? How the literal -blam!- does that factor in? I'm not anti social and I've played mature games since I was 6. XD XD XD, 3-4 hours XD I've blown that number out of proportion so many times, but every time I do it it's with friends. My friends and I will go entire weekends gaming at each others house. Otherwise we use party chat. You don't see me robbing banks because I play payday two, you don't see me chopping people in half with swords because I play the witcher (this game is honestly one of the most mature games with great storytelling, it might -blam!- up some underage kids) Blaming games for how our generation is doesn't make sense, a good majority of the -blam!-ed up kids don't even play games. Hell, I play games that involve cocaine useage daily, I don't do -blam!-ing cocaine. I play game with intense amounts of sex, I don't have sex every day (have had it though, but tell me this, who didn't lose their virginity in high school?) in the end, games don't effect kids. It's a stupid bullshit argument that doesn't work. Despite playing mature games since I was six, I'm unintelligent as you suggest games make you. I'm doing great in high school and I'm doing college on the side, games have helped me through that. They are past time that I enjoy so very much.

I have a better solution for all parents out there... Bloody teach your god damn kids some manners and respect! Maybe if parents would stop freakin spoiling these brats and letting them get away with everything. Then mabye, Just maybe we would not have violent, Disrespectful little devils poisoning the environment with there presence. Games don't cause violence, Other people can't indoctrinate your kid into bad habits if parents ACTUALLY put some effort into teaching there brats the difference between right & wrong. So they know that "F***" is a bad word & what not when they hear & know not to repeat these actions! #Logic

As a father of 3 the youngest being 9 (he plays destiny btw) you're forgetting one very important fact.....the parents who play an active role in teaching their kids right from wrong don't really have a concern. The parents who let electronics raise their children on the other hand.... While I don't let my youngest in lobbies with randomns because, let's face it people suck, this game is perfectly fine for him to shoot some fictitious characters for a little while. Trust me when I say he knows the difference between Crota and the real world. While i believe many people share your view I would appreciate you not trying to push your beliefs off on anyone who didn't ask your opinion. Edit 1....many of my friends don't own swords so I'm good there. Lol

I knew most of curse words years before I even got an xbox let alone live. I'm a deer hunter so violence is natural. Finally you as a parent pick to let your child play these games.

                          • I can't tell if this is a troll post or not but why in all of your reasoning do you cite 10 year olds and yet you want the game to be 18+. I agree with some of the premise but 15 yr olds should be fine. Besides for many gaming is an escape if you are being bullied in high school so let it stay that way. Also I learned every swear word I know from the back of school buses and definitely not video games, they learn them sooner or later. The violence argument has been cited over and over and I've read several research papers basically both saying opposite things so I can't give an opinion on that. I do know that I've played these games for a long time and have never harmed someone so that's a plus. Overall maybe there should be stronger age restriction enforcement but if there was for games my childhood would've sucked a lot more.

                          • Hey man I hate to tell you but if you raise a child into their teenage years correctly they won't be traumatized by an enemy with a sword and they won't carry anger into the real world.
