If I recall, Goku has been killed thrice in DBZ. Once by Piccolo, again by the heart virus and finally by Perfect Cell's self-destruct technique.
He is far from invincible. In fact, he is probably the most modest superhero out there.

Except he is brought back by the dragon balls and thus does not matter if he dies 10000 times and each time he comes back he is stronger than before.

His enemies also get stronger. Remember Broly? And Cell? Goku had to push himself to his limits in order to fight them. And that was after one full year of continuous training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
