So did Bruce [i]actually[/i] die in the Knightfall Protocol? If heard he faked his death in front of everyone so they'd think Bruce Wayne was dead and villains wouldn't have a reason to harm people close to him (like how Green Goblin kidnapped Aunt May when he found out Spider-Man was Peter Parker) and he could still be Batman.

Well according to the Comics KnightFall is when Batman gets injured and Azrael becomes the new Bats. This ends in a fight between Batman and Azrael with Azrael kneeling before Bruce claiming him to be the One True Batman.

Remember that Batman doesn't mean everything that he says. He tells her he won't call her or anything like that. I think he meant he literally won't call, instead he will just show up for her. I believe it was all an act to seem like a jerk and he's more literal than he lets on. Just my take...
