Actually there's a YouTube video of a guy getting an exotic engram and when he took it to the cryptarch in the reef it ended up turning into a green.

If anything that was from before the patch that made it so legendary engrams are guaranteed to be legendary or higher and exotics are guaranteed to be exotics.

No, it was in the reef, the reef is after patch. I honestly think it was just a bug that he even got an exotic engram though, I don't think they're supposed to exist in game as a drop.

Yeah. Or he just edited the recording of it. He most likely got a green engram in the first place, but edited it to look yellow/gold like an exotic.
