The Hive, and maybe the Vex, are already minions of the Darkness. Does Oryx just give them a more concentrated dose of Darkness to corrupt them ... even more? Is Oryx's army of Darkness different from the Armies of Darkness we've already been fighting?
Edit: I'm not explaining my question well. From what I understand, Oryx is using the power of the Darkness to twist his minions who are already under the influence of the Darkness. Does he just give them Darkness Extra? Or are the regular enemies only drinking Darkness Zero? I just don't get how he's changing minions of darkness to.. minions of MORE darkness.
Edit 2: I was talking it out with Schruef below, and so far this is my theory:
...Still just hard to understand how minions of the darkness would need to be brainwashed to be minions of the darkness x 2.
We already know the Hive have that other dimension where Crota was, so that lines up with what you say about Oryx using another dimension to twist his subordinates.
Maybe the Taken are like Darkness Special Forces. I'll put it like this: the Taken are to the Hive as the Marines are to the Navy. A part of the same force, but trained to use different tactics and abilities. This might not line up with the vidoc saying the Taken army members are twisted and brainwashed to be in Oryx's army, because you'd think the truly elite would volunteer to be in his special force (and not need to be brainwashed). With that, volunteering might not be enough to be twisted by that level of pure Darkness. Their actual conscious must be broken in some way to be a true, devout lemming of the Darkness.
It'd be the difference between a Guardian wielding the Traveler's Light, and the Traveler's Light wielding a Guardian. To be overcome with the Traveler's level of power, a Guardian would certainly lose all control of himself and simply do the bidding of the Light. How cool would it be to see the Speaker's "Taken" army? You think Guardians are powerful now?
And
I wanted to add that my previous ramblings relate to current minions of the Darkness. I think that includes the Hive and at least the faction of Vex that were worshiping the Dark Heart in the Black Garden.
Any other enemy would definitely need to be forcefully converted. The Cabal and Fallen would definitely need to have their minds broken to get rid of their free will.
This is all just my speculation, of course. I think it all starts to make sense in a logical way, but I'd love to hear other ideas.
I was wondering why Crota wasn't in his father's Taken army, and So Says Sage brought up the point that Crota has a similar flame affect about him that matches the Taken. My thoughts on that:
... I like what you're saying. How do I know Crota wasn't Taken? Yeah, he didn't have the jittery-ness, but we saw him in the Hive dimension. Maybe they can control that level of Darkness better there, but in our dimension they start to almost "rip apart at the seams," as it were. Almost like they shouldn't even exist in that form in our plane of existence... held together only by the power of Darkness and the will of Oryx.
We've heard tell (in the Grimoire) of Crota being like a shadow on the battlefield when we fought him on the moon (in our dimension). Untouchable, even. This is actually starting to make more and more sense!
In my mind I don't really view the Darkness as a tangible thing. It's more like the state of collapse thay these other races have taken advantage of. The Vex have got their whole 'taking control of all Time' agenda, the Cabal are just a military race and the Fallen are tribal scavengers. The Hive, I think, are the most closely associated with the Darkness. Perhaps they were created by it or maybe it's just a force their gods were able to harness.
-
Well the vex aren't the darkness them self but in the main story I think they were being corrupted by the darkness i.e the black heart or what ever was taken by darkness. There has also been some talk that vex aren't actually all on the same page in terms of being evil (different factions that believed in different things, good vex?). The cabal aren't even part of the dark army but were trying to escape it (I don't really know why we fight them except that they are a warring race and like to pick fights). The hive I think are the manifestation of darkness but still aren't the actual darkness. Maybe you could think of it in terms of possession. The other races worship the darkness (i.e influenced) by the darkness. where the taken are actually possessed by darkness much like in religion when a demon possess the person (this would also account for there unnatural powers). Oryx maybe not the actual darkness either but a agent of the darkness where the darkness has actually given him some sort of power. I'm not lore expert so I could be totally wrong.
-
Pretty sure I read/heard from somewhere that Oryx is a slave of the Darkness itself.
-
Regular darkness is like level 10..... But the taken are like "but ours goes to 11".

Edited by 6 speed: 8/30/2015 7:47:33 AMThe best analogy I can use would be how the reapers twisted the collectors who were former protheans. And as we saw in ME3 each race had unique skill sets that were twisted and buffed up by the reapers, remember the Asari adepts that were twisted into those uber powerful witches? I can't remember what they were actually called.

The Vex are "evil that despises all other evil". Their end goal is to merge themselves into all possible timelines. Not much else is really known, except they don't align with the Darkness. The Cabal are fleeing the Hive for unknown reasons. (Most likely because the Hive are scary as sh*t) The Fallen only want to reclaim the Traveller. The Traveller went to them before Humans found it and they had a Golden Age and when the Traveller left for unknown reasons, The Whirlwind (The Fallen's Collapse) happened and they began to follow the Traveller. The Hive are technically the only true evil in Destiny, according to current lore. Each of the factions unintentionally serve the Darkness' purpose. (Except for the Hive, lore has me believing the align with the Darkness.) Oryx will do whatever he can to avenge his spawn. Like someone else pointed out, he even has Hive under his twisted control.
-
I forgot. Does he have vex under his command too?
-
To give you an honest answer, the taken are under the influence of the darkness via Oryx. The normal enemies we fight were never under the darkness' control, they have their own motives for pursuing us and the traveler: The fallen want the Traveler to restore their once great civilization. The hive want to destroy the Traveler and humanity for the Darkness. The vex want to assimilate and control all aspects of space and time. They followed the traveler to us. The cabal want to expand their empire. They are actually fleeing from the darkness.
-
I'm kinda excited for I think a new version of the flood from halo lol
-
Here is a short answer for a long winded post. The taken Army are powered by Red Bull, have you noticed Oryx has wings?
-
Edited by Lightningchar: 7/4/2015 6:53:36 PMThink of it like this If you see taken enemy's fighting regular enemies (cabal or fAllen) or working with them(hive or vex) we can assume it would be like a kingdom with barons. The barons run army of their on and so those oryx. Oryx has made his own personal army to be directly ran by him. And if he chooses he can take the barons troops and make them apart of his elite army. And to make them special they must be different harder and more highly skilled troops. They must look different and be kept apart from the others.
-
If you notice, the Gorgons have the safe texture as the Taken and appear only inside the Vault. AND, in the taken King ViDoc and Trailer you see no Taken Harpies. Are Gorgons already Taken enemies? We know from the ViDoc that Taken Psions are called Gremlins and we know a couple other names, too. So, perhaps my theory has merit...
-
This isnt just darkness. This is ADVANCE DARKNESS!
-
Wow bro its so simple. Oryx can directly manipulate the darkness. It's like they're all sick and he's injecting them with Ebola. Get it? lol
-
As Filthy Frank would say: "Inject the memes into my blood stream." But instead with darkness
-
Interesting. Perhaps this 'Darkness' is simply something of a utility. Common enemies may all use electricity (for example) to further their means, but that doesn't introduce any conflict in them warring despite using a common resource. Perhaps Oryx is just...better...at using this resource?
-
My interpretation from what we've seen thus far is that Oryx doesn't just have soldiers that he commands. He corrupts the darkness in them and dominates their will. So the Hive, Vex, Fallen and Cabal are creatures of Darkness but they aren't without free will. Fallen have a command system in place with promotions, demotions etc. Vex have logic and a hive mind type mentality that determines their actions. Hive have an almost religious fanatical vibe to them. Even the Ogres have different classifications. The Cabal are militaristic. They have an empire that spans star systems. All four races have values and loyalty to certain factions or past affiliations. Oryx removes those affiliations and the Taken are left with no purpose or free will of their own. Their minds and bodies are his to command. And he tears reality to move his troops around. Sounds like a scary mofo to me.
-
Redbull is darkness. Confirmed
-
Well really we are the bad guys
-
No, he uses the power of DLC to re-skin old mobs in order to pretend he has a unique army!
I really, really hope I'm wrong and Bungie doesn't do this, leaving mob behavior unchanged.
-
Oryx rips them out of their dimension into his own which due to the forces of that dimension twists and warps those creatures. It's like how we could only face Crota in his personal dimension and it had certain rules.
-
Edited by britishninja99: 7/4/2015 1:06:57 PMIf you've beaten Crota you've killed a Taken. Maybe the reason that Oryx is so upset that Crota is dead is because he was the FIRST of the Taken. That would explain why he looks similar to them but is also more powerful.
-
He's giving them DAKNESS X-TREME with more electrolyyyyyttesss!!!
-
Darkness Zero... Can't stop laughing
-
I don't think the Vex are part of the Darkness. Probably just the hive and the taken
