Looking to upgrade my console, tell me what I should get and why

Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
[b]I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.[/b]
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

The last of us and uncharted look amazing but when/if naughty dogs quality of games drop, I'd lose the two best games on my console.

Poll your friends and see what your closest and/or most active gamer friends own and buy that. That's what I would do.

If you can afford it, best option is both. If i had to pick, looking at what you wrote, I'd say go Xbox. Backwards compatibility is coming this year for 360 and your Destiny account will transfer. If you had more friends on one console or the other is say go for that one. PS4 is nice too though. Overall, I'd say they're basically the same, minus the exclusives.

2 RepliesIt really doesn't matter, I love playstation but if you play on Xbox already go for the One, but Ps4 exclusives recently have been more than outshining the Xbox ones, and has higher frame rate at 1080p graphics. But the psn is admitilly inconsistent with uptime. It's really just personal preference.

I just got an xbone (I'm a ps user for life) and I got totally lost in that dashboard, however I'm enjoy Xbox a lot, if you're into halo and gears don't think it twice, get Xbox but if you want something different get ps4, Playstation is straightforward, easy to navigate and noticeable faster opening and closing stuff but not to a point it's impacts negatively, I'm loving Xbox1, I just got titanfall deluxe edition for 12 bucks, check videos man, specs are nothing as long and you have fun

2 RepliesXbox Live is more stable than PSN. PS4 has slightly better graphics [i]most[/i] of the time. I WUV THEM BOTH so don't get angry, fellow console owners lol. I would personally find the exclusive titles that I want and buy a console off of that. Do you like Halo and Gears of War, or Uncharted and God of War?

the Xbox one will be backwards compatible soon I think. it's already available for Xbox preview and I've been told that it works really well

Go with PS4 cheaper online i think 10 dollars less for the year you get the free games every month some are actually surprisingly good. If you're a diehard destiny fan you get the exclusives and can rub it in even though there nothing special.... No man's sky is PC and PS4 i think it's gonna be freaking awesome but it probably is not for everyone id look it up if you have not seen it.

Any system you want, honestly. Where are your friends playing? Do you intent to play ALOT of Destiny? (PS4 has more content) Check out exclusives. Which one would you like? That should help you make a decision ;)

As a PS user. I'll go with the logical approach and not bother starting all over. Just continue where you left off. So upgrade to the One. PS is tempting idea but if you don't care for the exclusives then don't bother. Just carry on to what you're used to.

PS4 would be the obvious way to go but it's a tough choice since you've already made progress on Xbox. PS4 is where Destiny has exclusives on and PS4 is a generally better console (though I've heard Xbox Live servers are more stable.) Xbox One is alright and you're Destiny account would transfer over if you upgraded to Xbox One from Xbox 360. I'm on Xbox One and have considered switching to PS4 but I really don't want to completely restart my Characters. I've had quite a bit of issues with my Xbox One and my internet, but other people have rarely any issues. It's personal preference. Do your research before purchasing, I didn't do enough research and I regret it.

Hardly anything is exclusive release anymore, so just about everything is available for both. BUT, Xbox announcing backwards compatability is pretty big, imo.

Since your friends are about a 50/50 split, I would say it comes down to a few items of preference: 1. Which controller do you find more comfortable? For shooters, I prefer the Xbox, but for fighters, I prefer PS. 2. Which exclusives are you more likely to enjoy? Halo/Gears/Fable etc, or God of War, Last of Us, Uncharted? If you go with an Xbox One, DEFINITELY get one with 1TB hard drive, or one of those USB 3.0 3TB hard drives, my xbones 500gb internal hard drive fills up way too quickly. I also have a 500gb PS4, and have yet to run out of space. Since I have both systems, I use each for different games: Xbox One - Destiny, Dragon Age (most recent games I've played) PS4 - Arkham Knight, MK X, GTA 5, Destiny
