So what did the UNSC do with the Portal to the Ark once they finished the conflict? Just kinda leave it there? Maybe terraform it to not look so ugly?

They studied it. The science teams were lead by William Iqbal, a xenoarchaeologist. The study and investigation of the portal's systems were kicked into overdrive when the Halo Array was detected to have begun the activation process. With the aid of the Sangheili, the UNSC was able to get the portal activated again and reach the Ark again.

Don't use Halo Wikia. It's outdated and filled with conjecture. If you're going to use a Halo Wikia, use Halopedia. It's updated much more often, and with much more accuracy.
