This all goes back to an old fantasy gaming analogy.
Fighter (Titan) beats Thief (Hunter), Thief (Hunter) beats Mage (Warlock), and Mage (Warlock) beats Fighter (Titan).
It might not be quite the same in Destiny, but basically it's just about what classes "cancel-out" the other.
