Too often, almost reputationally, Canadians try and claim credit for something they didn't do. Very few (if any), British Army regulars, Marines and Navy personnel, were 'Canadian'. Most Canadians don't appreciate that the war was not, in larger measure, a North American conflict but rather a world war. Their militia service was in garrision and its not like the British Army at the time would rely on such troops for anything. For further reading, though its a blog its well cited: https://stevendbennett.wordpress.com/essays/the-militia-myth-in-the-war-of-1812/ Its sad really. Canada's identity; if it has one, has been forged from the propaganda that they are 'not' Americans. While politically and socially true, the same could be said of Californians. The common bonds, dignity and values are perhaps more similar than any other two peoples on earth. I pray that someday, Canadians can move past the lies and embrace that that truth.
