Ok, now that the game has been downloaded to your console we can get started! Time to make your Guardian.
There are 4 main things you will do as part of character creation: choose a class, choose a species, choose a gender, customize appearance. You get 3 character slots to play with so if you want to create 1 character for each class you can, or 3 of the same, or 2 and 1, it really doesn't matter but I highly recommend at least trying all 3. Keep in mind that the decisions you make here will be permanent for the character currently being created. You can always make a 2nd or 3rd character and delete old ones you don't like.
Classes: The playable classes in Destiny are Titan, Hunter, and Warlock which could easily be refereed to as Warrior, Rogue, and Mage respectively. I do not purport to be an expert on all 3 classes, but I can give you the basic idea. Players can only wear armor designed for their class, Warlocks cannot wear Titan armor. Every class has 2 sub-classes (3rd sub-class comes with the Taken King DLC) that will define exactly what they can do, more on this later. If you're not sure remember that you can always create a 2nd or 3rd character to try out another class and can delete characters as needed. In addition to armor every player can wear a class item. As of the posting of this guide class items are purely cosmetic in nature with a few minor exceptions. Titans wear Marks (a towel sized cloth that hangs from the right side of the belt), Hunters wear Cloaks (capes and scarves with hoods), and Warlocks wear Bonds (metal circlets that often have holograms, worn on the left arm). Here's a very quick and simple breakdown of the classes:
Titan - Titans specialize in toughness and holding fast against enemy attacks. They wear imposing heavy plate armor and are known for being able to take more damage then the other classes.
Hunter - Hunters are quick and nimble, they focus more on avoiding damage rather then tanking it and recovering. Hunters wear practical leather armor with light metal plates. Guns are a Hunters best friend.
Warlock - Warlocks really justify the use of the term "space magic" by quickly recovering from any damage taken and dishing it out just as easily. They wear long cloth robes with very light armor.
Species, Gender, and Appearance: Your characters species and gender will determine what appearance options are available to you, which voice actor will voice your character in cutscenes, and what emotes they have. (Yes Destiny has emotes). If you're interested in lore...
Human - The Traveler lifted them up to a Golden Age and the Darkness torn them back down. Ever since the Collapse the City has been the only safe haven on Earth. Though the Traveler is no longer active it remains as a silent sentinel guarding the City from outside forces. The City is now a safe haven for Humans, Awoken and Exo alike, especially those who have been brought back as Guardians.
Awoken - These blue aliens used to be Humans before the Collapse. Something changed them out in the far reaches of the system and now, well, they're blue and have glowing eyes. Most of the Awoken live out in the Reef, a collection of large ships and asteroids that sits on the edge of our system and the Darkness. The rest serve as Guardians on Earth.
Exo - These self aware machines were once built for war back during the Golden Age and now are brought back to fight again. It is theorized that the numbers in Exo names represent the number of times that Exo has had it's memory wiped.
Remember that these choices are permanent so...yeah. Keep that in mind as you customize your character. After you've finalized your choices a cutscene will play and afterwords you'll be on your way to the starter mission.
Welcome to Destiny.
