I’m going to go back to putting the finishing touches on the new Subclasses and trying to figure out how I can make Blink less frustrating to fight against. People keep showing up at my desk asking me when I’m going to remove Blink from the game, and I don’t want to do that, so back to the drawing board!
-From the desk of Jon Weisnewski
Dear Jon,
You've made quite an impression on these forums the last couple of days and I'm not quite sure it was the splash you had intended. While I'm sure there are a lot of Guardians who'd like to have a word with you about that, today I'd like to talk to you about the comment above and problem solving not just in a sandbox, but in the real world as well.
Without going too in depth (you or anyone else at Bungie can find my thoughts at any time under the tag #bumpfortruth) I have always posited that when you all decided to allow us to use our own weapons, armor and unique class abilities in PvP, you were creating an experience in which there may occasionally be items or abilities that give advantages in situations. Weapons like Vex and Thorn might be powerful, Arcblade may be destructive, but that the overall depth of the arsenals at our disposal means that we have a multitude of ways to counter anything thrown at us.
I'm taking this from a reply I gave to a post in which the OP was upset with Blink users and insinuating they were all scrubs and Blink is broken. It's the kind of post I assume you are referring to in your statement and honestly, by what I've seen so far, the solution you may come up with worries the hell out of me. Not because I use Blink, I don't. But because like Vex, Suros, Thorn, ARs, Black Hammer, etc, etc... I'm worried you're looking for a solution to a problem that may not lay completely in the weapon or ability.
So here is something to think about when contemplating problem solving in a sandbox. One of the basic tenets of competition is that, in order to asses the strengths and advantages of an opponent, we must first understand what we ourselves are capable of and where we fall short. Here is my reply to that post:
I get you're frustrated dying to players using Blink, but coming onto the forums and talking shit to everyone who uses it kinda makes you look like a sore loser.
If you're willing to take some advice, there's a pretty effective way to counter Blink but to counter it, you have to understand it.
While Blink allows the user to teleport forward in place of a jump, it does come with some drawbacks. The biggest consequence and the most relevant to anyone facing it, is that for the distance of the Blink the Hunter/Warlock is essentially blind.
The second drawback that is relevant to killing them is that they can't Blink more than twice in a row without hitting a cooldown.
The last thing to understand is that 99% of the time someone is using Blink, they're going to be headed forward or up.
So what people need to do is think about that and what it means and try to form a strategy to counter it.
It's easy to just hop on a forum and say nerf Blink, but look where that thought process has gotten us.
So we know that our opponents can Blink and that makes them a bitch to hit, but we also know that they are momentarily Blind, can only Blink twice and are generally headed one of two directions.
So what can we do to use that to our advantage?
The answer is as simple as one button press.
JUMP.
We've been doing it since Mario, so we know how it works. Press A and jump into the air.
When our enemy Blinks, they do so with the assumption that they are going to teleport, but you are going to be in relatively your same position when they get to the other side. If in that instant they're blind, you jump... "Holy f**k, where'd they go??"
You just bogarted their Blink.
And by either using jump abilities that allow you to move in the air or by jumping consecutively, even if they Blink again you have the advantage and they're screwed after the second Blink.
And by knowing what direction their Blink is taking them, it allows you to equip a close range weapon like a Fusion Rifle to melt them as they reappear or to drop on them with a shotgun.
Is it perfect? No. Some maps work better than others. Shores? You'll kill Blinkers for days. Close quarters map like the Anomaly, advantage them.
The point is that if people were willing to accept a little personal accountability and ask themselves if they're dying because of a weapon or because they could be better or know a map better or know their class and abilities better, people might find that there are a lot more great weapons and abilities and ways to succeed in this game than they thought.
Just something to consider the next time you're in the Crucible.
I hope this is something you read and take to heart Mr. Weisnewski and I hope you never change Blink.

Once they nerf shotguns the blink will cool itself down

I agree with you, but to counter your point, shouldn't you just learn to play the game the way Bungie intended? If blink is gone or changed, perhaps we are the ones needing to adapt.

Edited by THE SARGE 01: 7/21/2015 12:03:57 AMCompletely agree with Op. I am not a blink user, but do unserstand how infuriating it is to face a player abusing blink and coupling it with a shotgun. There is however a very easy way to counter blink. Very simple, jump out of the way. The player using blink can only use it twice before the the cooldown renders him unable to jump for about 2 seconds. All you have to do is jump out of the way. This simple technique plus the predictable trajectory of the blink jump renders blink fairly easy to counter. Just think about it for a bit rather crying nerf here on the forums. I am absolutely sure Van Halen gives two shits about Blinking douchebags

If people are complaining about blink and wanting it nerfed they may as well nerf the run and slide too lol. So dumb. I'm not an avid PVP player at all but when I do play I get killed by a variety of everything people post on here they want nerfed. ( Blink/ shotgun/ Thorn/ vex/ last word/ felwinter/ all the supers/ etc. I think it's just part of the game. Learn how to counter it or learn how to master it or create all 3 characters and get a taste of everyone's supers/ abilities. Just play the freaking game and quit complaining.

Even though I enjoy blink I think it needs to be changed or go completely.
-
Blink is getting changed. Get used to it. You guys shouldn't have abused it. There's still neat little raid and strike tricks my friends and I use that Bungie hasn't nerfed or noticed. Why? Because I didn't abuse it. It doesn't matter what the move/weapon/enemy/strategy is. If you abuse it, it gets removed

Play a top tier player, blink is used in stupid ways

Edited by CrestedEBIN: 7/20/2015 10:11:54 PMI think I read it all and nobody mentioned that every other type of jump allows players to reload When blinking , if you were in the middle of a reload it cancels the reload So for everyone that doesn't blink.. and doesn't know how frustrating it is to not be able to reload while needing to blink to safety - let me confirm - I would always rather have more bullets in my gun when my feet touch down or sooner if possible . So while blinkers are harder to hit - they also have to become significantly less mobile to reload thus making them easy targets - ( is why I assume they have invisibility ) - just saying Also blink is hard to figure out at first - I worked hard to figure out what each stick angle and time lapse between button pressed would yield for my end location - something that would cause me to feel like my efforts at learning this difficult jump were a waste of Time would be the removal of it - I believe that the game was great and is great and will continue to be great - however - I do wish all developers to not be bullied by the cry babies of the community - I want destiny to be diverse and difficult to master - I want it to be a genuine thought process - and above all I do not want this game to become a game for everybody - If everyone is a master then no one is
-
I totally agree with you bro. It's people in PVP that complain abd get the weapons nerfed everytime.you don't hear people in PVE complain alot about weapon damage to the boss or asking them to nerf the weapon cause it kills the bosses quicker.I mean they are saying that Destiny has 10 years ahead and that we should'nt care about the nerfs but then you have to wonder in those 10 years how many changes will be made due to PVP players that lose and have the whole game changed in PVE.it's sad really.

Hey fun fact the mobile app on Android didn't even have the entire opening to that weekly update. I had no idea blink was being announced until this thread made me think to open it in browser.

That comment actually came from Sage Merrill, intended with a bit of humor. However honestly blink the most overpowered ability in the crucible.

Edited by travmac311: 7/20/2015 1:17:49 PMJust make blink drain 1/4 of their shield every time it's used (in pvp) until you red bar. It can refill in the same time frame if you don't get shot or blink again.

I see a lot of posts about asking for a titan blink. As a titan I don't feel that's needed. BUT, if a striker did get Blink. It should be a lightning bolt blink and replace shoulder charge. Think something in the style if pikachu's recovery move in smash Bros. Oh and you have to be grounded. Because tank.

I interpreted his comment about Blink the same as you did, so thanks for posting this. As a person who has played with and against Blink, my input is that it is well balanced. It can be a powerful tool but it still has its drawbacks: it's difficult to use consistently, it's predictable, and it can be countered. Let's not get heavy with our nerf bat.

Its the same way with thorn - slide ot sit down to get rid of DoT - dont try to outshoot when the other guy already has you on the red - if a guy headshots you twice, give him credit and acknowledge the kill Not a huge thorn user, but overall annoyed at all the Nerf posts. Instead of finding a way to deal with some weapons some players just cry NERF. First Vex then Suros and soon our beloved hand cannons (fate and adept jewel) will soon take the place of AR's uselessness. An endless cycle of nerfing...
