Advice on Quiting Destiny

Now this isn't some "I'm sick of Destiny and all it's bullshit!" rant post. I'm honestly thinking of quiting Destiny all together. So why don't I just leave? Because I feel addicted. For the past 9 or so months, I feel like my life and all my free time has revolved around Destiny. No other video game has consumed so much of my life like Destiny has. It would be one thing if I really enjoyed the game, but half the time I don't, I just find it frustrating. Recently one of my closest friends, who played Destiny with me a bunch, completely deleted Destiny from his hard drive and confessed that "it was an unhealthy habit". I wasn't in the slighest bit upset. Inatead i felt proud of him, because I agree, it is an unhealthy habit. Now i'm not sure if I could ever bring my self to delete all my hard work in Destiny. After all; I have this weird philosophy that you should never get rid of proof of labor. And even though it's just a video game, I feel as though I have put a lot of hard work into Destiny. But i'm getting a bit desperate. I may be asking the wrong group here, but here goes nothing. What advice can you guys give on how to quit Destiny? I've been trying to fill in the gap by playing other video games, but I have nothing new to play, and other games just aren't keeping me quite as entertained (it's like Destiny is crack and other video games just feel like weaker, lesser drugs). When I discovered the Mass Effect series in January of this year (amazing series btw), I felt like I could just enjoy Mass Effect whenever I got frustrated with Destiny. Now that i've beat that trilogy, i've got very little to occupy my free time other than Destiny. This addiction has got to stop. I have no incentive to play this game anymore, and yet it's all I think about. Some people may say to "just pace yourself better and play in smaller sessions", but i'm too affraid I'll get sucked in all over again. I never tought that i'd look at "3 days of no Destiny" as a milestone! So what advice can any of y'all give on how I can quit the addiction that is Destiny?

  • I was in the same boat when destiny first came out. Then I maxed out my characters and got most of the exotics and stopped. Then VOG came out and I started up again and then stopped when I got all the new content. Same with the CE and HoW DLCs. If you play this way, you'll find it easier to limit yourself. It may be different from you because I'm more of a completionist when it comes to gaming. Another suggestion would be to only have one character. You might be less inclined to play if you only have one character. Other than that, maybe have one of your friends create a password for your console so they can force you to pace yourself. ...or you can just delete destiny and save your progress on a flash drive so you have it in case you ever want to play again. I don't think is the way to go since destiny 2 will eventually come out and then you'll have to force yourself not to play it (good luck with that)

      • Well if you want to play video games instead of Destiny, look at some genre you enjoy such as RPG, FPS or platformer and find one of the top rating games inside and play them. For me, if i'm bored of Destiny (AKA for 6 hours), i would play Borderlands 2 or tales from the borderlands. However, if you want to do something other than video games, well find something that interests you such as a book or sports and try to set a goal for yourself. But, if you feel like going back to games just use my advice above. But this doesn't mean you cant go back to destiny! :) Good Luck guardian

      • Have you played Far Cry 4? I've been playing it a lot recently and it's keeping me off Destiny.

      • I'm in the same situation I decided to stop playing whatever I hated most I've nearly stopped playing crucible and have stopped playing vanguard playlists Now I've cut time just for nightfalls and raids and it's working pretty well Maybe I'll level up my husk of the pit After I'll play Crota till I get crux of Crota Then quit that raid maybe occasionally VoG to get praeydeths revenge(I deleted a character that had it) I did POE cuz why not and got the bounty so I'll do that when varicks gives it back Conclusion/summary/real answer: Figure what you like playing in the game or what you "need" to do. Stop picking up crucible+vanguard bounties unless they are tied to what you know you will play ( they might make you want to do an event you weren't going to originally) And just try to space out your new mandatory checklist over time. The more stuff you decide you want to do the more time you should give yourself to do it. IE don't do a prison both raids and a nightfall in one day, space it out over the week

        • Completely understand. My addiction started to go away once I obtained every gun and armor. I only play it on Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday. Sometimes. It's honestly a very unhealthy way to live. You schedule your day around it and the relentless effort of grinding is consuming. I'm happy to say I have let go and just enjoy certain aspects of the game. The struggle is real!

        • 1.Take Destiny disk. 2. Use Destiny disk to cut your Totinos Pizza. 3. Just kidding, you don't want to touch your pizza with trash. 4. Start smoking for a hobby instead.

        • You are addicted but so is everyone else. They get you with good gameplay and grind and you're -blam!-ing hooked. The best way to stop would be to just quit playing in general or limit the experience to PVP (which is what I've done)

        • You have a total of just over 15 days of game time which means after 9 months of owning the game that's between 1 and 2 hours of destiny per day. Wouldn't call that a problem, but from what I'm seeing a casual healthy hobby.

        • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g79dWuqXe5o This video pretty much explains what your talking about. I feel the same way man. This game creates a habit which is really an unhealthy one for some people, myself included. I stopped playing it about two weeks ago (aside from trying to play for a few min last weekend). I just started working out more and enjoying other things besides destiny. When I do play videogames Ive been playing Farcry 4 (bought it with all the dlc for less than TTK costs). I havent brought myself to delete the game yet but everytime I even think about playing that game Im filled with disgust about how much time Ive wasted on that game over the past year.
