Advice on Quiting Destiny

Now this isn't some "I'm sick of Destiny and all it's bullshit!" rant post. I'm honestly thinking of quiting Destiny all together. So why don't I just leave? Because I feel addicted. For the past 9 or so months, I feel like my life and all my free time has revolved around Destiny. No other video game has consumed so much of my life like Destiny has. It would be one thing if I really enjoyed the game, but half the time I don't, I just find it frustrating. Recently one of my closest friends, who played Destiny with me a bunch, completely deleted Destiny from his hard drive and confessed that "it was an unhealthy habit". I wasn't in the slighest bit upset. Inatead i felt proud of him, because I agree, it is an unhealthy habit. Now i'm not sure if I could ever bring my self to delete all my hard work in Destiny. After all; I have this weird philosophy that you should never get rid of proof of labor. And even though it's just a video game, I feel as though I have put a lot of hard work into Destiny. But i'm getting a bit desperate. I may be asking the wrong group here, but here goes nothing. What advice can you guys give on how to quit Destiny? I've been trying to fill in the gap by playing other video games, but I have nothing new to play, and other games just aren't keeping me quite as entertained (it's like Destiny is crack and other video games just feel like weaker, lesser drugs). When I discovered the Mass Effect series in January of this year (amazing series btw), I felt like I could just enjoy Mass Effect whenever I got frustrated with Destiny. Now that i've beat that trilogy, i've got very little to occupy my free time other than Destiny. This addiction has got to stop. I have no incentive to play this game anymore, and yet it's all I think about. Some people may say to "just pace yourself better and play in smaller sessions", but i'm too affraid I'll get sucked in all over again. I never tought that i'd look at "3 days of no Destiny" as a milestone! So what advice can any of y'all give on how I can quit the addiction that is Destiny?

  • You should start gambling. I hear that's a pretty social habit

  • Usually getting a job and making money and having "your own stuff" is a pretty good reason to give your self some space with destiny... Find a job work 50hrs a week. Save up. Move out of mom or grandmas basement. The rest should fall into place...

    • One if you have the hard copy, bust it. Two delete anything you have regarding destiny from the hard drive. Three, never play agian. Hang out with people instead of their sprites.

    • Honestly, just do weeklies. Eff patrol. Eff queens bounties. Eff the Reef altogether. After reading several addiction posts, I can see more clearly what Destiny is at its core. Limited time rewards to bring you back again and again. Daily bounties to level up and unlock perks on those rewards. And when BungieVision decides you're not playing the game the way they intended...they change the formula, people complain, but keep pulling the lever to get the pellet. Destiny really is a Skinner Box at its core.

    • I didn't read all this, cause I'm lazy, but Destiny was a game created to make people have a constant thirst for more content. They purposely made the game more limited, took out some story, even, so we wouldn't feel satisfied with the game. Then they sell dlcs. I know this, yet I am hopelessly hooked to the game.

      • I've found turning the ps4 and starting to be more of a chore. Especially when i have to deal with recruitment and all that just to get an etheric light that i don't need. I have been putting in less and less time each week for a few weeks now. This week is probably less than 2 hours. I won't do the weekly heroic. Have 450 coins and every exotic. No point I will 100% sure quit when the patch hits. I will return in 2 years when the actual sequel is out. Just set your goals and stick to them. Mine seems easy enough, right? Keep the data on the hard drive if you like just toss the disc or sell itif it's even worth any money(i would imagine the trade in is very very low so probably not worth the drive to walmart) Check back in to this thread when the patch rolls out. That'll be the end for you. They WILL have a better game in destiny 2. They will clean house and bring in new devs, fire some old ones (looking at you Johnny boy!) and it'll be a lot better. Good luck man, this is not a game, it's more of an unhealthy addiction.

      • Start going to the gym, find a good trail to jog, buy a new bike and actually use it. When I feel something occupies too much of my time, whether it's video games, some girl, drinking booze, smoking weed, I concentrate on fitness.

Well I would say try something relaxed and slow paced but fun. I have been replaying fallout games in prep for fallout 4 and I have to say it's quite enjoyable. Depending on your pc, the witcher is really good. As a tip turn off nividia hair physics, it consumes a hell of a lot of power to maintain. I still haven't finished the witcher yet because i'm taking it slow doing the side stuff and getting immersed in the world. Even then I feel extremely satisfied and already more than happy saying it's not only a good game but probably one of if not the best we may see this year. If you're looking for a competitive game CS:GO, League of legends or dota are good depending on your preference. That or just take a look around steam. Chances are you will find a good game as long as you avoid early access.

          • Space it out, Do vog hard on two chars on Wed, get your strange coins on Thursday, check in on Friday to buy from Xur, Sat do Poe, Sun do Nightfalls, and the rest of week don't play or just do side stuff like bounties and level gear but only for an hour or two. It will help if you put together an experienced group to do the raids with on the planned day doing it as fast as possible. Good luck!

          • Yeah, just take a break. When you come back your perspective will be changed. Seriously. Before HoW I managed to maintain 3 characters on a weekly basis. Nightfall, weekly, dailies, both raids, etc. Then HoW dropped. I have a full time job. There was no way I was going to run all of the old content (mainly helping out others) plus all of the new content on 3 characters each week. Bungie helped with this a bit, since PoE's difficulty is definitely gratifying, but in no way rewarding once you've gotten three Ciphers. I haven't even bothered to run nightfall's lately. I'm still caught up and have every exotic in the game save for one armor piece, which I'll just wait for Xur to bring whenever that may be. I just hop on from time to time to play whatever with friends, or grind strikes or pvp for new weapons to reforge and try out. It's great. I love this game, the mechanics and design, etc. I'll always come back, but breaking that "I need to do this before reset omg!" cycle is for the best.

            • It is addictive, but it does not have to be an unhealthy addiction. I would not delete it, keep it, use it as reward only after you have done something healthy or constructive. The game is a lot fun, we need fun things to do, just in moderation. I know, I found myself consumed and I'm married with four kids. I caught myself before it was an issue and turned it into a motivator for myself. I think if you delete it you will feel worse bro. It only takes 21 days to make new habits permanent. Try it, it works. Good Luck!!!!

            • Destiny is addictive. But I think if you looked at your post objectively you'd see a bigger problem. You say you're looking for another game to fill the hole that Destiny will leave in your life if you quit... Come on man! Don't you see that you play entirely too many video games? It's not uncommon, especially if you speak to other people on the forums. Truthfully, if you can't find another game that captures your interest, you should quit and use the opportunity to expand your real life. That's what's important. If an alcoholic quits drinking without a support group they'll likely move on to something else that triggers the reward system, like weed or speed, etc. You're doing the same thing by looking for another game to fill that void. Put the controller down and pick up an instrument. Go learn how to rock climb. Start having conversations with your loved ones again. There's more to life then PS4 or XBOX. Good luck to you buddy.

            • Have someone else delete everything Destiny related for you. Preferably someone who knows what they're doing. Have them put all your shit in the vault so if you ever decide to try again, you have your shit, and have them delete your characters and the game off your hard drive.

            • Truthfully destiny is addictive, no I'm not being stupid, no I'm not making shit up. Destiny is 100% addictive, I'm not saying sell your kids or sell your mouth addictive but it's one big slot machine really. It's like gambling, just one more roll.

            • I would focus on social life again. Go out have a nice time, drink some beer and have a good laugh. If you are into mountainbiking and live near a nice mountain or trail go search for others who do the same. And be proud for doing something else then gaming. Make a bucket list with stuff you want to do.
I am gonna do the same thing next year. Everybody needs to grow up once and since I have a daughter and a job I want to invest my time into my family and myself beside the gaming. So I started a company which I want to do a lot for next year.
• I deleted Destiny from my hard drive just over a week ago (same reasons as you) and I don't regret it, quite the opposite, I've been playing the Witcher 3 and feel like I rediscovered why I love video games, I've also had a lot more free time to do actual real life things because I've not been mindlessly grinding all the time. I've obviously still got my saves and I've stayed on this forum as I intended to return for TTK, but everyday that passes I feel less inclined to return. Just delete it from your hard drive so you can't just click to play, see how you feel after a week.

                • Just quit. Straight up. If you have second thoughts of quitting then maybe, you shouldn't. You could, in theory, quit then wish you hadn't and regrind. So my advice is, don't delete the game simply don't play as much.

                • Find a game that captures your interest. For me I was sick of destiny near the end of dark below so picked up Dark Souls 2SFS and played that. It held me over till HoW and it made destiny more interesting. Or you could go outside and have a real life...

                • you don't have to quit all together. I just log on to pick up bounties I like to do and when I have time maybe on Tuesdays resets I play all the bounties I like to play. And than throw in some PVP. but I'm also looking for a new game to replace D
