Advice on Quiting Destiny

Now this isn't some "I'm sick of Destiny and all it's bullshit!" rant post. I'm honestly thinking of quiting Destiny all together. So why don't I just leave? Because I feel addicted. For the past 9 or so months, I feel like my life and all my free time has revolved around Destiny. No other video game has consumed so much of my life like Destiny has. It would be one thing if I really enjoyed the game, but half the time I don't, I just find it frustrating. Recently one of my closest friends, who played Destiny with me a bunch, completely deleted Destiny from his hard drive and confessed that "it was an unhealthy habit". I wasn't in the slighest bit upset. Inatead i felt proud of him, because I agree, it is an unhealthy habit. Now i'm not sure if I could ever bring my self to delete all my hard work in Destiny. After all; I have this weird philosophy that you should never get rid of proof of labor. And even though it's just a video game, I feel as though I have put a lot of hard work into Destiny. But i'm getting a bit desperate. I may be asking the wrong group here, but here goes nothing. What advice can you guys give on how to quit Destiny? I've been trying to fill in the gap by playing other video games, but I have nothing new to play, and other games just aren't keeping me quite as entertained (it's like Destiny is crack and other video games just feel like weaker, lesser drugs). When I discovered the Mass Effect series in January of this year (amazing series btw), I felt like I could just enjoy Mass Effect whenever I got frustrated with Destiny. Now that i've beat that trilogy, i've got very little to occupy my free time other than Destiny. This addiction has got to stop. I have no incentive to play this game anymore, and yet it's all I think about. Some people may say to "just pace yourself better and play in smaller sessions", but i'm too affraid I'll get sucked in all over again. I never tought that i'd look at "3 days of no Destiny" as a milestone! So what advice can any of y'all give on how I can quit the addiction that is Destiny?

  • I understand. It feels like a second job now. I play with weapons that I don't even enjoy just to level them up. Destiny really taps the OCD side of me and I feel like I need to get everything and squirrel it away in my vault. Summer is really helping me cut back and enjoy the weather. It's time to get back to my "normal" vices, alcohol and sex.

  • Scholar of the First Sin - 100 hours of content. Then you have NG playthroughs, covenants, pvp, learning weapons and builds. The Souls games are the only ones that rival Destiny and Elder Scrolls for hours played for me.

  • The only way is to delete your characters. I know a guy that came back after deleting it from his hard drive and breaking the disk.

  • Variety is the spice of life as they say even though us humans live for repetition. Ultimately if you dont want to play it you have to find something else to invest you time into that you find meaningful. Im sure some people have said get a job but thats honestly not a bad idea, it would make destiny feel more meaningful if you decided to keep playing because right now youre at a place where you can play it all the time. But you want to give it up all together and I can understand you want to focus on new hobbies, thats normal afterall.

  • I was in the same position until I read the info on the weapon update and since then I have no desire to play and don't see myself playing. A friend of mine already picked up elder scrolls. I might give that a try...or actually get something productive done around the house.

take a break. if you dont feel like playing dont play. i took a long break after i got all gears and weapons from VoG. another long break after i got all gear/weps from Crota. got all weapons and gear from PoE. tried trials, and got frustrated to the point where i dont even bother with it. i already collected all of the exotics up to HoW except for hunter exotic Legs (the new ones) but other than that, yeah, it is an unhealthy habit that thankfully isnt pestering me anymore. when you have all exotics and raid gear maxed out and ascended there is truthfully no reason to play anymore. and i decided that trials is not worth the stress and time. heres my advice, if you have another pastime, look deeper into it and try to "finish" it. if not, dont worry about it. just play when you feel like playing again.

Well If you do leave destiny you have to fill that void in your life with something else you enjoy otherwise you will just come back. I would say that I am addicted to destiny as well. It is all I think about mostly which isn't healthily and the way I am going to quit Destiny is not buy TTK or just sell the destiny which ever. But at the moment I don't have anything to replace it with so that's the point. In a couple of months we will be building our first house and then I will have something to fill my time in with, so I will probably stop then. Another thing you could do is delete a character so you only have two to do everything on each week that is 1/3 less time you need to spend on Destiny

    • Have you tried finding a hobby with a good community to be passionate about? I like computer science and political philosophy, for example.

    • A good way to subdue this addiction would be to invest in friends, family, or something else that feels life giving and not as constantly frustrating.

    • If this is honestly an addiction for you, then it's definitely not healthy. I would say take a month or so break from it ( requires some willpower ) and see how you feel.

    • If you break your console with a sledge hammer, you have proof of your labor in a physical form and proof that you broke your addiction literally. There problem solved, no console, no problem.

      • You can delete the game but as long as you don't delete your characters they will still be there for you later if you decide to come back. Honestly sometimes deleting the game is the only way to get away from it as this game does have some very addictive qualities to it despite being a rather lackluster game. You can play through the Mass Effect trilogy several times and it is different each time so I would suggest doing that again. I've played through the first ME three times and found sidequests I missed the first 2 times despite spending 40-50 hours per playthrough. The 2nd Mass Effect has amazing replay value with all the different relationships and ways it can play out with the suicide mission, etc. Honestly just try to take a few days off from the game. I used to play non-stop but then I basically just quit playing and would make plans with friends or to go to the gym and do other stuff during my normal play hours when I got home from work. After you take a few days off from it and maybe try some other games it is much easier to stay away. I'm at a point now where I hardly think about the game and only get on once a week to run the weekly strike for some coins to see if Xur has anything of interest. I can basically get my full week of Destiny done in one night now and then move on to other games and other stuff.

      • It's ok to take a break and come back later like I did. I love destiny but it doesn't have much to do

      • Keep playing Destiny. Keep running the same strikes over and over. You'll get bored with it.

      • Just dedicate a specific amount of time you can play. And find something else to do until TTK, there you might see why you actually enjoy the game or not.

      • If you have a physical copy, eject the disk from your drive and snap it in half, if it's digital delete it from your drive, erase your characters and delete all you gear first, just make your decision and do it. This game was literally designed to be addictive, you just need to say enough is enough and go for it.

This post is full of dumb. You can delete destiny all you want and all your gear and time are saved on Bungies server, you can download and play again any time. If you are an adult or mature you should be able to take a break or quit this or any game anytime you want. If you can't find a better game to play then stop playing games for awhile period, get a healthy hobby like reading, start a board gaming group, go out to the movies, go to a bar or watch some Television you may have missed while in midst of your alleged Destiny addiction. Did I mention this post is dumb.

      • Control yourself you sad sap. You are man, not animal. If you don't want to play Destiny, don't play Destiny. No one and no thinh is forcing you to play.

      • Here is the middle ground I found that helped. I sold my Destiny disc but kept my data files. I figured if Bungie ever got it's act together and gave me a reason to come back, I could just pick up. But if on the other hand I was tempted due to withdraw from the psychological scheduling science, the thought of rebuying the game would make me think twice. This approach has kept me Destiny CLEAR since January. I still visit the forums to provide feedback and see if Bungie is making any changes.
