Advice on Quiting Destiny

Now this isn't some "I'm sick of Destiny and all it's bullshit!" rant post. I'm honestly thinking of quiting Destiny all together. So why don't I just leave? Because I feel addicted. For the past 9 or so months, I feel like my life and all my free time has revolved around Destiny. No other video game has consumed so much of my life like Destiny has. It would be one thing if I really enjoyed the game, but half the time I don't, I just find it frustrating. Recently one of my closest friends, who played Destiny with me a bunch, completely deleted Destiny from his hard drive and confessed that "it was an unhealthy habit". I wasn't in the slighest bit upset. Inatead i felt proud of him, because I agree, it is an unhealthy habit. Now i'm not sure if I could ever bring my self to delete all my hard work in Destiny. After all; I have this weird philosophy that you should never get rid of proof of labor. And even though it's just a video game, I feel as though I have put a lot of hard work into Destiny. But i'm getting a bit desperate. I may be asking the wrong group here, but here goes nothing. What advice can you guys give on how to quit Destiny? I've been trying to fill in the gap by playing other video games, but I have nothing new to play, and other games just aren't keeping me quite as entertained (it's like Destiny is crack and other video games just feel like weaker, lesser drugs). When I discovered the Mass Effect series in January of this year (amazing series btw), I felt like I could just enjoy Mass Effect whenever I got frustrated with Destiny. Now that i've beat that trilogy, i've got very little to occupy my free time other than Destiny. This addiction has got to stop. I have no incentive to play this game anymore, and yet it's all I think about. Some people may say to "just pace yourself better and play in smaller sessions", but i'm too affraid I'll get sucked in all over again. I never tought that i'd look at "3 days of no Destiny" as a milestone! So what advice can any of y'all give on how I can quit the addiction that is Destiny?

  • Try and play a single player game for a month or so. Than come back to it later.

  • I think with games you have to be well in mind it can't consume your time. Minecraft did that to me in and I almost failed a grade because of it. I eventually got bored of it and figured it was more fun not playing it and doing other things. I think the issue is not having other things to do. Find other more important things to focus on and the problem fixes itself. I now have physical fitness stuff and a relationship to focus on ,so I often don't play Destiny excessively. In matter of fact, I'm just coming back from a month long break. I guess for me the game is fun because I hang out with friends while playing it. Don't worry about deleting it from your hard drive. All the data is on a cloud storage, so you won't lose anything. Don't worry, I would love people to enjoy Destiny and be apart of the community, but not at the cost of their life and especially when they don't enjoy it. Good luck on your journey and I hope one day you can comeback on better terms. Some Additional Tips(In case of extreme situations) -Sell your system(Only do this if it gets really bad) -Get Psychiatric Help( It can do wonders for some people) -Get a Support Group( There are groups for this kind of thing and many of them have helped a lot of people)

  • Find a new game to get addicted too, if you're on Xbox one give neverwinter a shot. I play neverwinter all week and hop on destiny on Saturdays to run through trials with a few friends.

    • Create a goal like finishing the triumphs and then put the game away. You can feel like you've finished it and you don't have to look back feeling like you left the game half way.

      • If you feel that this has become a real problem for you then I think you should delete your characters. I think it would be best for you to do it yourself, the process of personally letting go will feel good. "But I just can't bring myself to do it." If you're having this problem then I'll explain what I do, maybe it will help. Whenever I want to delete something that I objectively know I don't need or want but something is holding me back I just put my finger on the button, clear my mind of any thoughts, and act. Just clear your mind and act.

I can tell you I was rather obsessed with this game up until a couple of weeks ago. I've played since launch and I realized I've done and have everything and my vault is completely full... Looking back I think I was just going thru a rough time in my personal life and I used destiny as an escape. Ask yourself are you escaping from reality a little too much? I feel like I've gained some healthy perspective and I'm taking a break. I may hop on a couple of days a week, but I don't feel that angst anymore. This was really my first video game and I really didn't know any better and didn't know what to expect. I think now I can look back, and hope I can now maintain a more healthy perspective on gaming. When TTK comes out I'll be really excited, but what I realize it's not a race, and I think I made it one, and got caught up in the grind for a particular shader or certain exotic. Anyway that's my two cents, and I do feel a little more "alive" not being sucked into a video game.

        • Stop video games altogether for at least a week. Read a book, ride a bike, shoot hoops with a friend or whatever you might enjoy doing. After a week if you want to play games then maybe pick up playing something other than Destiny and you'll probably enjoy it more. I was in the same spot you are in now and once I stopped playing for 1-2 weeks the addiction was broken and I don't even have any desire to play Destiny. I absolutely love video games among many other things and it is nice to be back to actually enjoying playing games when I do. Currently playing Borderlands 1, Divinity Original Sin, Dark Souls and Binding of Isaac. Can't wait for Fallout 4. If you want a fun shooting game to coop without the addictive gimmicks I would recommend BL1, BL2 or Payday. Good Luck!

        • Depends on what you do in destiny. Play with friends? Gear hunting? Helping ppl? Pvp? If anything, it's actually a good thing to give destiny a break. One thing I can say though. I gave up gaming for a good five years or so and in those five years was one of my greatest years spent away from gaming. It was more rewarding real life experiences with new and interesting things. If your single, look up PUA. It's "life changing." It's old but you'll see what I mean. I only came back to gaming now that I settle down more. Just something on the side to enjoy while living a regular life. Hope that helps you. Gaming could be an addiction. I've seen it happens alot. I call it the VG (video game) curse.

          • Trade it in...or smash it the cd lol Its addictive because of the stupid reward system. You cant just do a specific thing knowing you'll get a reward... Literally the only way to get anything...is play the game heaps and hope!! The rng system gives you it. Its a -blam!-ing stupid design. Bungie are -blam!-ed lol

I see Destiny's potential, and it is amazingly huge, but it hides being something I can't put my finger on. Edit: Its potential is why I stay, but every month I get more and more reasons stacked for why I should leave and play the huge variety of other games out there.

          • Play other games I play destiny time to time but have been playing warframe now. Destiny is getting stale, I only do nightfall and crucible sometimes since I prefer pvp in there instead of warframe and advanced shitfare.

          • Dark souls series was way more addicting and still is for a lot of people. I love it and look forward to the final chapter. Too bad it will be over but some games need to learn when to stop. *cough COD :)

          • If you really want to quit something, anything addictive, the best thing to do is distance yourself. If a game is taking over your life to the point where you feel you are consciously playing against your will, it's time to get rid of it. Sure, for a while everything else will feel less exciting, because you're coming off the addiction, but eventually you will appreciate other games again. If not, there's nothing wrong with getting outside, watching shows, or getting away from games in general for a while. Overcoming an addiction is hard, but you can do it. Best wishes.

          • I am quitting cause 1. This game is way too time consuming 2. Cause this game was never as good as it was anticipated to be, once you finish everything it's basically just the same thing every week 3. Because Bungie is being lazy and not making the right decisions, you don't need to nerf everything to "balance" a game.

            • Coming from someone who has over 2 years played of world of warcraft (which I no longer play) yes that's PLAYED time not the 10 years I've played the the game just stop and don't look back. I always think of going back and trying it for a bit but I know where that would lead, so just stop and don't touch it again.

            • I was in the same boat when destiny first came out. Then I maxed out my characters and got most of the exotics and stopped. Then VOG came out and I started up again and then stopped when I got all the new content. Same with the CE and HoW DLCs. If you play this way, you'll find it easier to limit yourself. It may be different from you because I'm more of a completionist when it comes to gaming. Another suggestion would be to only have one character. You might be less inclined to play if you only have one character. Other than that, maybe have one of your friends create a password for your console so they can force you to pace yourself. ...or you can just delete destiny and save your progress on a flash drive so you have it in case you ever want to play again. I don't think is the way to go since destiny 2 will eventually come out and then you'll have to force yourself not to play it (good luck with that)
