Destiny 101 Weapon Types

Lets talk about guns, you like guns, right? Primary: Your primary weapon is, obviously, the weapon you will primarily be using throughout Destiny. Ammo for primary guns is plentiful and you will usually spawn with plenty of it at the start of every activity. Primary ammo that has been dropped from killed enemies appears as a small white block. Auto Rifle: You may know them by the name Assault Rifle in other games. Auto rifles are fully-automatic (rapid fire) guns that work best at short to mid ranges. With the ability to fire so many shots in a moment auto rifles deal very little damage per bullet. Focusing fire and managing recoil will be major points of focus. Scout Rifle: 1 trigger pull = 1 bullet. Scout rifles are the long range primary weapon. Keep in mind however that scout rifles are not snipers, 1 shot will not always guarantee a kill, especially against shielded targets. Consistent fire will be needed to take down most targets. Pulse Rifle: The middle of the road between auto rifles and scout rifles. Working best at mid-range, pulse rifles fire in 3 shot bursts, 1 trigger pull = 3 bullets. Stability will be an important stat to focus on as the burst style fire will need to be managed. Hand Cannon: High impact, revolver style guns. Hand cannons work best at mid range and are intended for high precision gameplay. Hand cannons often have very low magazine sizes with 13 being an all time high. Hand cannons also cannot spawn with scopes, only different iron-sights. Special: Special weapons are, again obviously, intended to fulfill specific roles. Ammo is much less common than primary and appears as a slightly larger green block. Shotgun: Shotguns fire in a spread of multiple pellets and are only effective at close range. The impact stat of a shotgun states the amount of damage per shot if all pellets have hit the target. Sniper Rifle: The longest range weapon type in Destiny, snipers fill they same role they do in every FPS. Sit, scope, aim, fire. Careful though, much like scout rifles 1 shot, even a headshot, does not guarantee a kill. In PvE you'll face many enemies that simply cannot be killed in 1-shot by normal weapons. Snipers always spawn with scopes with only 1 exotic exception. Fusion Rifle: An oddity among special weapons, fusion rifles fire in a spread much like shotguns but must be charged before they can be fired. Charge a fusion rifle by holding down the fire weapon button, at the peak of it's charge the fusion rifle will fire automatically. This drawback is balanced out by the fact that fusion rifles have greater range than shotguns. Fusion rifles are incapable of dealing precision damage. Heavy: These are your big guns for emergency situations and DPS. Heavy ammo rarely drops from enemies but when it does it appears as a large purple block. To access your heavy weapon hold down the switch weapon button. Pressing or holding the switch weapon button while holding your heavy weapon will switch to your primary. While holding your heavy weapon you can double tap the switch weapon button to quickly access your special. Machine Gun: The heavy version of an auto rifle. Machine guns have large magazines and can come in 2 main varieties: very high fire rate/low impact and low fire rate/high impact. Rocket Launcher: One of the first things you'll notice about rocket launchers is that they do not have a impact or range stat. They instead have blast radius and velocity respectively. The larger the blast radius the more damage is done towards the center of the blast. The higher the velocity the faster the rocket will fly. Most rocket launchers don't operate very differently from each other with fire rate being the only base stat that really stands out. The perks a launcher can have, however, can greatly change how they operate, Tracking and Grenades And Horseshoes being 2 major examples. Rocket launchers are also incapable of dealing precision damage. Finding the right weapon type for your play style will greatly improve your Destiny experience, nobody likes playing with a gun type they aren't good with. A good rule of thumb is to pick a special weapon that will fill any gaps your primary doesn't. Examples: Scout Rifle and Shotgun or Auto Rifle and Sniper. Combos like these will give you a lot of versatility, at least until you figure out how to make that special combo you've cooked up work well. Lock and load Guardian!
