Precedence has also been set with other games' expansions before Destiny was even released. New expansion = your old gear is obsolete. They could very well continue with pushing your weapons to higher levels but that probably gonna be some other 'etheric light' type item to farm. Would rather do it for new weapons to experience, not a one time use item
