A story and crafting have nothing to do with being massively multiplayer. They are more indicative of being an RPG. Skyrim is not an MMO, but it has both of those. Those are the RPG elements of the MMORPGs that you are thinking of (most likely WoW).
The other features are spot on though. It would be possible to have an MMO fighter or an MMOFPS. I wish Destiny were an MMO. As it stands it is a shared, closed world (who can really defend it as "open" with all its invisible walls and death barriers) multiplayer FPS with RPG elements.

Bungie should take a long good look at how Planetside 2 is working. I admitt, I don't have a lot of hours put into that game, but... Daaaaaaaaaaaayum.

So you agree, it's definitively not an MMO, not MMO-lite, not even MMO-esque. To me, it's a shooter first and foremost with some minor character customization features by way of an addictive random loot system.

Oh, definitely. I didn't mean for that to come off as contradicting you. I was just pointing out that crafting, in depth story, level progression, gear customization, etc. are not features of an MMO. It seems like a lot of people on this forum talk about MMO as a genre when all it is is a description of the multiplayer capabilities. They forget that WoW (the most often cited example) is an RPG that also happens to be MMO.
