Yes you could ascend you gear, but only after you did the endgame content of HoW which required you to use the HoW gear in order to achieve that level. You had to be 34 before you could start regularly getting Etheric Light. So even IF they allow you to further ascend your weapons it would only be done with participation in the endgame content which will be FAR above the level that the current gear is set at. Which means that either you are just NEVER going to be able to ascend your gear or you will have to take off your old gear in order to use the new gear that will ultimately get you to the point where you can use the old gear again. So no matter what you THINK you are gonna do you will still have to move on from your old gear. Even if its only for a a period of time.
