Destiny 101 Suggested path for new players

STOP This section will detail what I believe to be the path through Destiny that will allow for the best possible experience. While I have very specific reasons for why I believe in this method it is only a suggestion. You do not have to follow this method to successfully progress in Destiny. Disclaimer done. It's not strange for a new player to reach a certain level and then not know how to proceed past it. Using this method you should be able to reach the level cap with as little difficulty as possible. Keep in mind that this guide assumes players have all the currently available DLC and therefore have access to all Destiny activities. As new DLCs are released this guide may have to be revised so please keep in mind that this guide was last updated for the House of Wolves DLC The current level cap is: 34 Level 0: First day in Destiny! Now this is gonna sound a little weird but if you have friends who have already been playing Destiny I suggest you complete the entire main campaign (from the first mission to the Black Garden) without them. I've seen new players team up with their level 30+ friends who just carried them through everything and by the end they had no idea what was going on, hadn't learned anything gameplay wise, and basically just didn't know what to do without someone else being there to carry them. By playing every story mission without experienced players you give yourself the opportunity to encounter challenges and then force yourself to figure out what the best way past them is. Give yourself the opportunity to really learn how to play Destiny, I think this will be invaluable for you later on. PRIME EXAMPLE (skip to 12:30): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8UqIMniHjw Also, if you're doing a mission for the first time, don't increase the difficulty. Us vets might talk about how easy everything is but for a new player Destiny does no hand holding. Do yourself a favor and don't make anything any more difficult then it needs to be. If a certain mission is set to a level higher then your own go do some leveling to reach it, nothing says you have to push yourself through over-leveled activities. Which brings me to my next point... Level 4: Level 4 unlocks something that is very useful to both new players and vets alike: daily bounties. Every day, on the Tower, the bounty bot will have 6 Vanguard (PvE) and 6 Crucible (PvP) bounties that can be completed for experience and reputation. Lower levels may only have access to 3 or so starting out. Completing these bounties will be very instrumental in helping a new Guardian level up. Level 20: This is where Light comes in, for more information on Light check the General Information section under Leveling here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/140909847 The simplest way to acquire Legendary armor with Light is to buy armor from Tower vendors. What you do to accomplish this will depend on how you prefer to play. If you prefer PvE... - Reach rank 2 with the Vanguard. This can be done by completing daily Vanguard bounties and by completing strikes in any of the strike playlists. - Acquire Vanguard marks. You will use these marks to buy armor. Vanguard marks can be awarded to players who complete strikes in the strike playlist. If you prefer PvP... - Reach rank 2 with either; Crucible, Dead Orbit, New monarchy, or Future War Cult. You can increase your standing with the Crucible by playing Crucible matches and completing Crucible bounties. You can increase your rank with the other factions by completing any PvE or PvP activity that grants reputation while wearing said factions class item. (Faction class items can be purchased from faction vendors for glimmer). This includes daily Vanguard and Crucible bounties, strikes, and Crucible matches. - Acquire Crucible marks. You will use these marks to buy armor. Crucible marks are awarded to players who finish Crucible matches. You don't even have to win, but you get more if you do. Once you've purchased and equipped a full set of legendary vendor armor you should be able to reach level 32. Level 32: Here's where DLC content really comes in. If you're lucky enough to get Etheric Light you can use it to ascend any legendary armor to level 34. But, if you're not lucky enough to get 4 of those (which you probably aren't, that'd be insane) you can complete the level 32 Prison of Elders challenge to acquire an Armor Core. This armor core can be used to purchase a piece of level 34 armor from Variks on the Vestian Outpost. Variks cycles his wares on a weekly basis so if you do the level 32 PoE once every week you'll be level 34 in a months time. For more information on the Prison of Elders and it's unique challenges consult my Guide Nexus here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/138484088 And that should do it, a clear and simple path from level 0 to the current cap.
