It is a great chance to meet new friends. You're just passing up on every opportunity to do so by not asking the people to come across at the Tower/Reef, running patrols, during the matchmaking activities that already exist.
When I started playing Destiny I knew ABSOLUTELY NO ONE. Zero friends in my list.
It's all up to you, pal.

In the same boat on starting. But I have 2-3 hours spare time, so those friends I have are always busy or with another group

I had 15 people on my friends list now I have like 300 I have met a ton of cool people for sure.
