But WOW was an MMO, a game which relied more heavily on character progression and skill sets rather than gear. Weapons and armor still played a part in the game but it wasn't as crucial and tied to character strength/progression as it is in Destiny.

True and the raids were HUGE
-
Tell that to any raider in wow. Gear is everything. And with each new expansion the grind begins anew. And even if it's smaller scale destiny is a type of mmo.
-
This. Gear is everything in an mmo. Weapons everything. When the new tier comes out you grind your butt off to get that next tier weapon and gear. And the next tier come out you do the same thing. Weapons that took me months to get never get equipped agin. It's the nature of grind games. There is no end.

But the thing is you could still be halfway decent in the game if you had a good skill load out but in destiny if you don't have decent gear then you are completely useless
-
Again gear is more important than anything. Item level = light level. You can't even access raids in wow without a required ilvl. And as you take on higher challenges if your gear sucks you either wipe or are being carried

This is correct!
