Destiny has MMO concepts. That doesn't mean it should act like every other MMO.

It doesnt, there are many things it does not do that other mmo's do. Just because it does this is not an issue people that have an issue with this just need to leave the game and move on.

It will be an issue if my old weapons outdo the new ones.

some will for that is how all rpg/mmoish games work. some gear will be just as good or better where others will not. high end y1 gear will be better or equal to low end y2 gear.
