The books are more canon than the games. The games limit his abilities intentionally in order to make it somewhat challenging.
That said- Id like to see a book for the Guardians. Then maybe they'd stand a chance. As is right now, what they do in game just doesn't compare to what chief does in cutscenes or the books.
