People really need to stop comparing this game to MMOs like WoW. This is a fps. It's no more a "MMO" than CoD and halo.

  • I've simply been getting harassed for it "being an MMO" then again harassed for it "not being an MMO". I don't really care what genre anyone categorises this game into.

  • Yeah, that website that 4 people have heard of is the reigning authority on what is an MMO or not. Even the dev's don't call Destiny an MMO. I guess 16 player lobbies are Massive to you, though. Muted.

  • Can you show me a console MMO with a 64 or 128 player lobby? Can you tell me why the division is being called an MMO but is also at a 16 player max? Btw, telling people you're muting them just makes you look like an asshat

That's 16 people reserved solely for social spaces. Anywhere else it's 12 or less (the majority of those areas are reserved for PvP only, whereas the majority of the PvE arenas are 6 or less). Nothing massive there. If then, we're to rely on MMO type concepts (instancing, gear leveling, mat grinding, etc) to call this game an MMO, then I'll have to ask why we don't consider RPG's MMO's since they have similar concepts (like Borderlands). So we're just left with the second M and an O. If you want to call Destiny an MO, be my guest. That's still not enough to call it an MMO, which like I stated above, the dev's don't even refer to it as one, so why would everyone else? Personally, I'll use the same genre title as the game developer since it's their damn game. BTW, correcting someone's forum etiquette makes you look like an asshat. This one's for you. Muted.

  • Oh yeah and let's call halo an open world shooter while we're at it. Don't get so defensive, I simply asked a question. One you didn't even answer, nor did you rebuttal with any logic. You CAN have up to 16 people in 1 patrol zone. Go start your nightfall then sit down, people will spawn in like crazy. A LOT more than 6 people in that Area.

  • And? Bungie has called it a MMORPGFPS and then an open world shooter. If people truly think this is a MMO then games likeCoD and halo can also be called MMOs.

  • No because CoD and Halo are missing key MMO elements. For example: Raids Dungeons (strikes) Weekly resets Different classes Different subclasses Quests I can continue if you like.

  • They introduced an activity called a "raid" which rewarded gear that was required to hit max level/maximise damage output etc... From that point a line was drawn in the sand and this was no longer a conventional FPS. Whilst Destiny hasn't fully jumped on the MMO side of it, they've been dipping their toes over. The problem is finding the balance between the two, which is relatively fresh territory for a Console game. There is no "ideal" model for them to follow and are most likely attempting to figure it out as they go. Check any other major "evolving" game; their forums contain all the same arguments etc...

  • MMO's have raids, instancing, gear leveling, mat grinding, etc. But so do RPG's. Those things have become so common place in gaming today that they can no longer be attributed to MMO's. At least not solely attributed to them. Even Bungie refers to their game as a shared or open world shooter.

  • Lol so if I add a raid to sonic and give it rewards then sonic will be a MMO? Lol your logic is flawed

  • I think your jumping to conclusions. Doesn't look to me like he said it was an mmo. Just putting their finger in the pie. Hope that makes sense.
