20 - 40 is the new grind to slow us down.
They couldn't start us at 34.
Destiny is always about slowing down progression and grinding.
I would be surprised if they gave us some system to stay at 34, but they probably won't.

I dont know for sure of course, but TDB had us at (max) 30 at the start working up to 32, HoW 32 to 34, so it seems conceivable to me that TTK could have us starting at 34 (max) working up to 40? 6 levels to climb compared to just 2 for TDB and HoW ?

If they dropped everyone to twenty everyone would tell bungie to go take a flying f***. Your telling me that after crushing Atheon, Crota, and Skolas all this time I won't be able to step foot in the raids for however long it takes to rank back up to 34? Never gonna happen. We absorb the light and it makes us 34 and we continue from there.

I honestly believe that there will be some type of system in place to keep our levels where they are at so we can then continue to 40 with our current set up.

Just saw this http://www.polygon.com/2015/8/5/9099851/destiny-the-taken-king-level-boost Looks like they might drop down to 20 or lower and we can choose to skip back up to our new level. Doesn't really say how it works just that a boost comes with it to get us up ttk starting level.
