I have an issue with this being refered to as trolling. Throwing mindless insults online is, to me atleast, not trolling. It's being an idiot - and that's all there's to it. Now, I don't think the vast majority of people actually believe or mean the things they post/chat but they're not smart enough to get attention in a productive way so they choose the path of least resistance. A good troll would add an element of satire and hints so that people reasonably had a chance of catching on to it and join in on the laughter, assuming it was worthy of laughing at. Examples of IMO somewhat clever trolling; having everyone vote for Somalia as the place of Justin Bieber's free show , giving the Interview perfect reviews online. Calling someone a whore or similar online has no element of satire and it's impossible tell if it's genuinely meant or not. Hence, it's just an insult. As for sexism, in this case I just think it was the easiest thing to attack. You have to keep in mind that we're dealing with pretty shallow people here - with a very limited imagination. But granted that it would have sounded differently if you had been a group of dudes. Personally - after seeing the comments male gamers and foremost the pros - recieve I'm leaning toward it actually being worse to get comments as a guy. With sexism it's atleast not [i]that [/i]personal. As a guy, with male gamers still being the norm, people become much more creative and IMO more personal. I'm sure chick gamers get that too, on top of the other stuff, but those are the things that I can imagine really sticks.
