Stop telling me to "move on" from my guns, please. (10 months later, STILL no response from Bungie)

Update- After months of Bungie decidedly ignoring this issue, and this topic specifically, I completely stopped posting almost 2 months ago. However, I still feel like I can't let this discussion fade, just yet, given it's obvious effects on future Destiny games. Everything I felt when writing this so many months ago STILL matters to me- despite the fact that I quit the game 6 months ago... So, I'm pretty sure it's still worth discussing. :P
Bungie Weekly Update 12/04/2014: "In the months to come, your quest to become more powerful will have more avenues that lead to satisfaction. The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected."

(From Tyson Green via the 8-19 TTK stream, on the topic of Infusion) We're really trying to deliver on people being able to find things that they're excited about and keep them and customize their character
This isn't just about Bungie making design choices that harm the player; it's about them doing it twice, after explicitly stating they wouldn't do it again. On top of that, it even goes against their own, outspoken design goals for TTK, which is absurd. ______________________ (TL;DR at the end) Disclaimer!
I'm very excited to acquire new gear in TTK, and I'm in no way trying to discourage players from "moving on" to new gear. All I'm trying to argue is that players should have the option to do so, on their terms. With that said...
I keep seeing arguments in favor of Bungie's decision to phase out Year 1 weapons, generally based on people's experiences in games of the MMO variety. Now, I understand that from a purely MMO background, players don't see any issue with leaving old gear behind in favor of new, better gear, because that's how MMOs operate. However, Destiny is not an MMO (at least from a combat perspective, which is what I'm basing my arguments on), and shouldn't be treated as such for a number of reasons. Main point-
1. Weapons in Destiny have a much more direct impact on player experience. Weapons in MMOs are little more than "stat sticks," with virtually no impact on gameplay other than increasing a player's DPS abilities; point, click, repeat. Destiny, on the other hand, is an FPS, and as such, choosing a weapon is infinitely more personal and important to players. Even if you only like one class of weapon, there's still a ton of options to sort through; impact, fire rate, stability, perk set- even the aesthetics of a weapon play a part in the overall feel of a weapon. As such, it's a pretty shallow argument to tell players like me to "get used to it" when weapons become obsolete because "that's how MMOs work." This isn't an MMO, and my gun of choice is way more important to my experience than any DPS "stat stick" could ever be (sentimental value notwithstanding, of course).
Secondary point-
2. Destiny's expansions have a bad habit of replacing content, not adding. And they happen MUCH more frequently than any MMO expansion; each new DLC essentially removes old gear from the game, replacing it with "better" gear across the board. Why the hell should I pay for new gear that will be outdated in a few months?! I payed for it, I grinded for it, I upgraded it, and I kept it. This game is built on grinding for gear, and I've accepted that! But why would any sane gamer continue to grind if their efforts are consistently invalidated? What's the point? Especially after the 2.0 patch effectively already balanced Y1 gear to exist alongside Y2 gear in PvP. If the gear is "balanced" enough for PvP, than any claims the "Y1 gear is too powerful" are null and void, and PvE players are getting pissed on for no reason. Everything has been primed and readied to be included into the Y2 ecosystem, yet it's still left behind. The only reason this didn't bother me as much up to this point was because my old gear stayed useful, and became special because of its decreased availability; proof that I was here from the beginning. The idea of playing 'Destiny 3,' and still being able to pull out my Vanilla weapons in future battles is an awesome prospect. It would give weight to all the adventures I've been on, all the awesome feats I've accomplished, and continually validate and distinguish all my efforts to become legend, as they say. :P
EDIT- I didn't touch on this in my initial post, and I absolutely should have;
3. Most console games don't go through major overhauls, because new mechanics and balance choices tend to get implemented in sequels. An "expansion" in WoW is essentially the MMO equivalent of a sequel, not just an add-on. There is no "WoW 2," because Blizzard's "10 year plan" for the game was intended to exist in a single game economy for its entire lifespan. Because of that, it makes more sense for its expansions to overhaul the game in more impactful ways, because they take the place of proper sequels. "Destiny: The Taken King" is not "Destiny 2." As big as it might be, it's still an add-on to Destiny "1," as it were, and I think people should view it as such. If Bungie wants to reset the entire game, and start from scratch, so be it, but they should do that in the next game.
TL;DR: 1. Destiny's weapons are infinitely more meaningful to players than any MMO weapons could ever hope to be, in that they actually have a direct impact on how they play the game; they're more than just stat-increases. 2. And, seeing as how Bungie choses to remove old gear from the loot table with every DLC, thus shrinking gear options, the only way to keep any sort of gear diversity in Destiny, as well as validate all the effort player's put into the game, would be to bring old gear forward, period. ESPECIALLY considering that the 2.0 patch already re-balanced Y1 gear to better match Y2 effectiveness, so what's the hold up? If it's "balanced" enough for PvP, then it's sure as Hell balanced enough for PvE! 3. "Expansions" in MMORPGs typically take the place of traditional sequels, which makes it more understandable that they would bring major overhauls to the game; TTK is definitely an add-on, not a sequel. Destiny will have a proper sequel in the future (confirmed in production), and if Bungie is determined to completely level the playing field for gear, that's fine, but they should do that in the sequel.

Respect and enjoyed reading about your view but don't agree. I'm in the "gimme new stuff clique" - still it must be awful to lose stuff you love.

Bungie is discounting the personal relationship people develop with tools. This is a timeless dynamic they ignore at their peril. Nothing wrong with adding new, but what if they DONT hit the mark with new gear? Look at the pitifully reduced perks of HoW gear?!? Example: I'm not impressed with my Aegis of Kells pulse rifle with its 'chance' to do extra damage to Dregs, compared to my Time-On-Target or Praedith' Timepiece. Grinding yet-again to replace everything is too much like a make-work mechanic. This thinking is what drove my son to stop playing. *sniff* I miss running with him.

        • You know... This is an awesome post. Sums up my feelings perfectly. I think bungie should let us carry over a limited number of weapons to ttk. This would be a compromise that should please most players.

            • I use weapons from vanilla, TDB, and HoW. I feel like we would leave the old stuff behind on our own even with ascension still in game. Destiny would be a completely different game if they kept ascension. I feel it would make it very diverse and have something that most progression style games don't have, which is the ability to choose what we use. All I see happening with TTK is what happened before, we will all be wearing the same thing, using the same weapons.

              • Your right about everything except the game being an mmorpg, its not massive, barely multiplayer, unable to remain online most of the time and what role do you play in the game? None, they didn't develop the characters that much

                • So if old weapons become useless and we dismantle them all for new more powerful ones. Bungie will free up vault space and not have to fix that problem.

                  • Yea I wouldn't care so much if the new guns didn't look like a 3rd grader designed then with Legos. They look so stupid I would of thought they came from border lands or something. All this time and ability to design ANY type of gun you could think of and they made em look like shit, no thought at all just the most generic looking toys r us guns they could of thought of lol. Oh well I'll just have to see what the new trials weapons will look like. Bump!

                    • if the weapons are going to be obsolete then there is no reason to even play the vog or Crota. Can you imagine doing those raids your first time and your reward is a gun that you wont use because you obviously have more powerful gear. Its funny the people who are welcoming this change are the same people who got these weapons day 1 and used them and are not thinking of other players who haven't. But players who are new or just got back into the game not that long ago are getting screwed. I just got my word of crota last week and still haven't done vault of glass or gotten anywhere near everything from crota's end. Screw us right...... the ones who didn't get everything day 1. if you don't want to use your fatebringer anymore here's a hint don't use it you should have the freedom to choose how you want to play. I rather have the choice then not.

                          • I feel you. This is my first MMO-Type game. I think I'd be happy using my original guns in all new content. That being said, I am excited about the prospect of new guns, as long as they have better perks than dreg or shank burn. I think it would've been more sensible for them to phase them out over time, as oposed to cutting them off basically immediately.

                            • Leaving behind the elemental primary weapons from the raids is the hang up for a lot of people (VoC, fang, word, fatebringer, etc). Spent a lot of time grinding raids to get them. The problem is HoW's was a GIANT BUST for pve players getting elemental primaries. Not a lot of confidence in bungie to make new ones available without beating the new raid so we go into the expansion underpowered. Back to the days of long boring bullet sponge enemies with shields. The biggest problem though is they are removing any incentive to keep playing the old raids not to mention PoE whose only reason to play was to get etheric light. Destiny doesnt have nearly enough content that it should be making all of the previous end game content obsolete. Love playing Destiny but Bungie needs a plan. Every dlc seems to be a new direction. Year 1 was fun but it really was a beta. Hopefully Bungie knows what the hell they are doing now.

Excellent post with many valid points. I'm not enthusiastic about Bungie consigning all of our hard won weapons and gear to the dustbin. Especially after the House of Wolves DLC allowed us to ascend our old vanilla Legendaries up to current stat values. Making all current gear obsolete removes all need to play VoG, CE, ToO or PoE, basically there is no need to even own TDB or HoW. Knowing that our current gear won't be upgradeable to the new limit of TTK means there is little reason to even continue playing Destiny at this time. Factor in the overcharging for TTK in the UK ($63 instead of $40), plus the release of some pretty decent games recently, then there is even less incentive to continue with Destiny.

                                    • You know what Bungie SHOULD do if they absolutely do not want us ascending old weapons forward? Add ascended versions of the guns to the VoG, Crota, PoE and Trials loot tables. A small chance to get your favorite gun up to par with the new guns. Fatebringer (Ascended). Black Hammer (Ascended). I think this would be an awesome way to keep those old guns and even old armor alive in the game. And again not everyone would have them because they would be added to the already existing loot tables so this wouldn't "ruin" Bungie's vision.
