Stop telling me to "move on" from my guns, please. (10 months later, STILL no response from Bungie)

Update- After months of Bungie decidedly ignoring this issue, and this topic specifically, I completely stopped posting almost 2 months ago. However, I still feel like I can't let this discussion fade, just yet, given it's obvious effects on future Destiny games. Everything I felt when writing this so many months ago STILL matters to me- despite the fact that I quit the game 6 months ago... So, I'm pretty sure it's still worth discussing. :P
Bungie Weekly Update 12/04/2014: "In the months to come, your quest to become more powerful will have more avenues that lead to satisfaction. The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected."

(From Tyson Green via the 8-19 TTK stream, on the topic of Infusion) We're really trying to deliver on people being able to find things that they're excited about and keep them and customize their character
This isn't just about Bungie making design choices that harm the player; it's about them doing it twice, after explicitly stating they wouldn't do it again. On top of that, it even goes against their own, outspoken design goals for TTK, which is absurd. ______________________ (TL;DR at the end) Disclaimer!
I'm very excited to acquire new gear in TTK, and I'm in no way trying to discourage players from "moving on" to new gear. All I'm trying to argue is that players should have the option to do so, on their terms. With that said...
I keep seeing arguments in favor of Bungie's decision to phase out Year 1 weapons, generally based on people's experiences in games of the MMO variety. Now, I understand that from a purely MMO background, players don't see any issue with leaving old gear behind in favor of new, better gear, because that's how MMOs operate. However, Destiny is not an MMO (at least from a combat perspective, which is what I'm basing my arguments on), and shouldn't be treated as such for a number of reasons. Main point-
1. Weapons in Destiny have a much more direct impact on player experience. Weapons in MMOs are little more than "stat sticks," with virtually no impact on gameplay other than increasing a player's DPS abilities; point, click, repeat. Destiny, on the other hand, is an FPS, and as such, choosing a weapon is infinitely more personal and important to players. Even if you only like one class of weapon, there's still a ton of options to sort through; impact, fire rate, stability, perk set- even the aesthetics of a weapon play a part in the overall feel of a weapon. As such, it's a pretty shallow argument to tell players like me to "get used to it" when weapons become obsolete because "that's how MMOs work." This isn't an MMO, and my gun of choice is way more important to my experience than any DPS "stat stick" could ever be (sentimental value notwithstanding, of course).
Secondary point-
2. Destiny's expansions have a bad habit of replacing content, not adding. And they happen MUCH more frequently than any MMO expansion; each new DLC essentially removes old gear from the game, replacing it with "better" gear across the board. Why the hell should I pay for new gear that will be outdated in a few months?! I payed for it, I grinded for it, I upgraded it, and I kept it. This game is built on grinding for gear, and I've accepted that! But why would any sane gamer continue to grind if their efforts are consistently invalidated? What's the point? Especially after the 2.0 patch effectively already balanced Y1 gear to exist alongside Y2 gear in PvP. If the gear is "balanced" enough for PvP, than any claims the "Y1 gear is too powerful" are null and void, and PvE players are getting pissed on for no reason. Everything has been primed and readied to be included into the Y2 ecosystem, yet it's still left behind. The only reason this didn't bother me as much up to this point was because my old gear stayed useful, and became special because of its decreased availability; proof that I was here from the beginning. The idea of playing 'Destiny 3,' and still being able to pull out my Vanilla weapons in future battles is an awesome prospect. It would give weight to all the adventures I've been on, all the awesome feats I've accomplished, and continually validate and distinguish all my efforts to become legend, as they say. :P
EDIT- I didn't touch on this in my initial post, and I absolutely should have;
3. Most console games don't go through major overhauls, because new mechanics and balance choices tend to get implemented in sequels. An "expansion" in WoW is essentially the MMO equivalent of a sequel, not just an add-on. There is no "WoW 2," because Blizzard's "10 year plan" for the game was intended to exist in a single game economy for its entire lifespan. Because of that, it makes more sense for its expansions to overhaul the game in more impactful ways, because they take the place of proper sequels. "Destiny: The Taken King" is not "Destiny 2." As big as it might be, it's still an add-on to Destiny "1," as it were, and I think people should view it as such. If Bungie wants to reset the entire game, and start from scratch, so be it, but they should do that in the next game.
TL;DR: 1. Destiny's weapons are infinitely more meaningful to players than any MMO weapons could ever hope to be, in that they actually have a direct impact on how they play the game; they're more than just stat-increases. 2. And, seeing as how Bungie choses to remove old gear from the loot table with every DLC, thus shrinking gear options, the only way to keep any sort of gear diversity in Destiny, as well as validate all the effort player's put into the game, would be to bring old gear forward, period. ESPECIALLY considering that the 2.0 patch already re-balanced Y1 gear to better match Y2 effectiveness, so what's the hold up? If it's "balanced" enough for PvP, then it's sure as Hell balanced enough for PvE! 3. "Expansions" in MMORPGs typically take the place of traditional sequels, which makes it more understandable that they would bring major overhauls to the game; TTK is definitely an add-on, not a sequel. Destiny will have a proper sequel in the future (confirmed in production), and if Bungie is determined to completely level the playing field for gear, that's fine, but they should do that in the sequel.

  • I do notice how a lot of the argument for and against this revolve around the "mmo" (and believe me I use that term loosely with Destiny lol) aspect of the game, so for the sake of this argument, forget the mmo point of view. Look at any game with weapon based combat that has dlc/expansions Fallout Dragon Age Mass Effect Soul Caliber Assassins Creed Borderlands Fable And just about any and every game with rpg elements. Dlcs and (especially) expansions come with newer more powerful gear, does anyone really bitch about this? Maybe but I never see it. Mostly people seek out those new items and hunt for the most powerful ones to use and stick with it, do they ever go back to using old ones.. hardly if at all. Keep in mind I'm not trying to attack you Op(or anyone else) this is just my general thought with a small list of games I've played to show my point. By all means everyone, feel free to debunk what I've put or support and add to the list. TL;DR It's not just mmo's that phase out weapons and gear, just about all weapon based (especially RPGs) with expansions and dlcs do it too

    • TL,DR Relax, they know this so they'll literally just make another gun with similar if not the same exact stats of certain beloved weapons. Still get over it

      • I agree, I think we should be able to ascend our year one legendary gear to year 2 stats. They have made such a big deal out of every gun we have "having a story behind it"... I really don't get it, we are still going to want the new stuff....

      • i dont care if all of my old gear becomes worthless in TTK, im keeping my jacknife/graverobber and CE armor, Zombie apocalypse and venation III (as well as other select favorite gear amongst my titan/warlock). i SEVERELY regretted dismantling my ghostwalker gloves/feet from vanilla into TDB, and im not making the same mistake again. yeah, my vault is currently jam-packed with gear (especially the weapons), but in the end theirs alot of guns in there i dont ever use, so ill be dismantling as i go accordingly, and im sure their will be new weapons to love in TTK as well, but im not letting go of some classics. ever. keep your select personal favorite set, as it just might very well make a comeback like E. light did for HoW.

      • I still have my Ghallahad-E from when I was lv.16 it means a lot and I dont want to get rid of it. The same goes for my Husk of the pit, I used if from lv.22-31 and now its a necrochasm and I love it even more. Weapons are special to me and are important. Just like my cloaks or marks or bonds. I hold on to evrything because they are so important. They have memories attached to them. I dont care if I cant make my weapons as good as new weapons. I'll just do shit with some 365 weapons then.

      • You make some very valid points. Everything is well thought out and stated clearly and I agree with you on most points. However destiny is an MMO. They just don't like to call it that because it would inevitably be compared to WoW which it is nothing like. It has been stated numerous times that it is a FPSMMO. The first of its kind in that it has FPS combat with MMO mechanics. Other than that I agree with you but I'm looking forward to the new guns and armor.

          • A quick thought on the relevance of year one guns: A weapon's impact rating determines how much damage each shot does, its attack rating determines how much of its maximum potential damage it deals to an enemy dependent on that enemy's defense rating. Given we don't know the defense ratings of enemies the general consensus is that the level a weapon is effective to is its attack rating/10 - i.e 30 for 300 attack weapons, 33 for 331 etc. Given that 300 attack weapons were effective against level 33 enemies we can assume that a weapon will still be useful up to two levels above its attack rating. So 365 attack weapons should be good for level 38/39 enemies provided our guardians' actual level is there. I'd take that to mean that those 365 attack weapons we have will still be useful for nearly everything except the raid and power advantaged crucible events. The real challenge for Bungie is to develop new weapons to make us want to leave the old ones behind, which they completely failed to do in HoW. Agreed we all have an attachment to favourite weapons, but I believe the new foundry system and amount of new weapons we're getting will actually develop a more loyalty based system to certain weapons/foundries etc. Note: All of this obviously has the potential to go out the window if Bungie make a fundamental change to a weapons effectiveness based on light level which we'll find out in due course, but I wouldn't be too hasty in crying "all my year one weapons are useless" just yet. Useless is a very strong term!

            • You were lucky enough to be able to upgrade at all AND you keep exotics. This is an FPS with MMO like mechanics, loot grinding and gear timeouts are the normal. If you didn't see it coming, well sorry. This forces you to broaden your horizons. At the start, it's annoying and it really is a setback, but you make your way, find guns you love again, and the game goes on.

Yes, agreed completely with the OP!! I love it when you have a thought and are too lazy to make a thread to demonstrate your point to the rest of the community and then someone else takes the initiative and pretty much nails it. Even if they have to modify our old weapons so that they have the same perks and such as the new weapons, I'ld be perfectly content if it was just the gun model and the name that were allowed to be ascended to the current level, I just want to be able to use that gun as a badge that I am a vanilla player.
