Stop telling me to "move on" from my guns, please. (10 months later, STILL no response from Bungie)

Update- After months of Bungie decidedly ignoring this issue, and this topic specifically, I completely stopped posting almost 2 months ago. However, I still feel like I can't let this discussion fade, just yet, given it's obvious effects on future Destiny games. Everything I felt when writing this so many months ago STILL matters to me- despite the fact that I quit the game 6 months ago... So, I'm pretty sure it's still worth discussing. :P
Bungie Weekly Update 12/04/2014: "In the months to come, your quest to become more powerful will have more avenues that lead to satisfaction. The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected."

(From Tyson Green via the 8-19 TTK stream, on the topic of Infusion) We're really trying to deliver on people being able to find things that they're excited about and keep them and customize their character
This isn't just about Bungie making design choices that harm the player; it's about them doing it twice, after explicitly stating they wouldn't do it again. On top of that, it even goes against their own, outspoken design goals for TTK, which is absurd. ______________________ (TL;DR at the end) Disclaimer!
I'm very excited to acquire new gear in TTK, and I'm in no way trying to discourage players from "moving on" to new gear. All I'm trying to argue is that players should have the option to do so, on their terms. With that said...
I keep seeing arguments in favor of Bungie's decision to phase out Year 1 weapons, generally based on people's experiences in games of the MMO variety. Now, I understand that from a purely MMO background, players don't see any issue with leaving old gear behind in favor of new, better gear, because that's how MMOs operate. However, Destiny is not an MMO (at least from a combat perspective, which is what I'm basing my arguments on), and shouldn't be treated as such for a number of reasons. Main point-
1. Weapons in Destiny have a much more direct impact on player experience. Weapons in MMOs are little more than "stat sticks," with virtually no impact on gameplay other than increasing a player's DPS abilities; point, click, repeat. Destiny, on the other hand, is an FPS, and as such, choosing a weapon is infinitely more personal and important to players. Even if you only like one class of weapon, there's still a ton of options to sort through; impact, fire rate, stability, perk set- even the aesthetics of a weapon play a part in the overall feel of a weapon. As such, it's a pretty shallow argument to tell players like me to "get used to it" when weapons become obsolete because "that's how MMOs work." This isn't an MMO, and my gun of choice is way more important to my experience than any DPS "stat stick" could ever be (sentimental value notwithstanding, of course).
Secondary point-
2. Destiny's expansions have a bad habit of replacing content, not adding. And they happen MUCH more frequently than any MMO expansion; each new DLC essentially removes old gear from the game, replacing it with "better" gear across the board. Why the hell should I pay for new gear that will be outdated in a few months?! I payed for it, I grinded for it, I upgraded it, and I kept it. This game is built on grinding for gear, and I've accepted that! But why would any sane gamer continue to grind if their efforts are consistently invalidated? What's the point? Especially after the 2.0 patch effectively already balanced Y1 gear to exist alongside Y2 gear in PvP. If the gear is "balanced" enough for PvP, than any claims the "Y1 gear is too powerful" are null and void, and PvE players are getting pissed on for no reason. Everything has been primed and readied to be included into the Y2 ecosystem, yet it's still left behind. The only reason this didn't bother me as much up to this point was because my old gear stayed useful, and became special because of its decreased availability; proof that I was here from the beginning. The idea of playing 'Destiny 3,' and still being able to pull out my Vanilla weapons in future battles is an awesome prospect. It would give weight to all the adventures I've been on, all the awesome feats I've accomplished, and continually validate and distinguish all my efforts to become legend, as they say. :P
EDIT- I didn't touch on this in my initial post, and I absolutely should have;
3. Most console games don't go through major overhauls, because new mechanics and balance choices tend to get implemented in sequels. An "expansion" in WoW is essentially the MMO equivalent of a sequel, not just an add-on. There is no "WoW 2," because Blizzard's "10 year plan" for the game was intended to exist in a single game economy for its entire lifespan. Because of that, it makes more sense for its expansions to overhaul the game in more impactful ways, because they take the place of proper sequels. "Destiny: The Taken King" is not "Destiny 2." As big as it might be, it's still an add-on to Destiny "1," as it were, and I think people should view it as such. If Bungie wants to reset the entire game, and start from scratch, so be it, but they should do that in the next game.
TL;DR: 1. Destiny's weapons are infinitely more meaningful to players than any MMO weapons could ever hope to be, in that they actually have a direct impact on how they play the game; they're more than just stat-increases. 2. And, seeing as how Bungie choses to remove old gear from the loot table with every DLC, thus shrinking gear options, the only way to keep any sort of gear diversity in Destiny, as well as validate all the effort player's put into the game, would be to bring old gear forward, period. ESPECIALLY considering that the 2.0 patch already re-balanced Y1 gear to better match Y2 effectiveness, so what's the hold up? If it's "balanced" enough for PvP, then it's sure as Hell balanced enough for PvE! 3. "Expansions" in MMORPGs typically take the place of traditional sequels, which makes it more understandable that they would bring major overhauls to the game; TTK is definitely an add-on, not a sequel. Destiny will have a proper sequel in the future (confirmed in production), and if Bungie is determined to completely level the playing field for gear, that's fine, but they should do that in the sequel.

  • I... Completely agree 100%. Fatebringer is dumb. I haven't used my since I got my fang. You make some really good points that I personally have been saying for a long time. This game is different than an mmo because our weapons are ever so different and be not allowing us access to every gun in the game all it is doing is hurting the overall game.

  • I agree completely, I've spent countless hours getting and then leveling every gun I get just to be told they are obsolete, makes me want to give up on destiny, all the new guns that come out for each dlc suck no where near as powerful as the first guns in the game, I enjoy my gally I use it for everything tried using other rocket launchers just to be disappointed, it takes four rocket launchers to do what gally does by itself. I've preordered taken king only to regret it as I'm finding out what I'm getting for it,nerfing guns because people are crying about how op it is ha I've been wrecked by thorn as well but it's not the gun it's the user that can zero in on your head, so maybe you should complain about the player and leave the gun the way it is.

  • From what I've read from various interviews and official sources, don't delete your old gear. Not yet at least. I've seen mentions of breaking down old great to modify new gear in a sort of transmog way. There's also the fact that weapons are normalized in crucible, so old weapons will work as well as they always have there.

  • Think of this as a brand new "season." A new season of PvE and PvP, a new Meta, a new year.

  • It's the dictatorship of it all that gets me. "We didn't intend for the game to be played like this,we're changing it. We've created these new weapons ,so throw away your old ones". People are happy for new gear but it's the taking away of our right to choose that people are mad about. I can't wait for ttk but making our last year seem pointless is hurting a lot of us.

    • I agree with this post 100%. I still have a lot of gen 1 legendarys. I have Shadow Price (which is still the best legendary auto rifle in the game), Hide and Seek, Broken Truth, and all VoG weapons. Not to mention some classic gear like Ghost Angle and Duskwalker. And by TTK all my hard work will be for not? Sorry Bungie, I've been with you since the first Halo but if this is the type of company you have become then I want no more part of you.

      • I agree with everything here. I'm not buying ttk until I know my countless hours of grinding weapons wasn't wasted. Ironically I just did IB for the first time. All of the weapons I picked up in there will be useless in short order. Weak...

        • Im almost positive that we will be able to upgrade any weapon to the max year 2 damage after the last expansion for year 2 releases. Just save your guns and wait until the end of The Taken King.

            • Hello, I haven't read you whole post but I did read in brief why you thought destiny wasn't an mmo when it very much is. 1. Weapons. Weapons in destiny are very much stat sticks. Just because you are aiming and shooting not just clicking 1-10 to do an action make it feel otherwise. Rate of fire Impact Reload speed Range. Stability are all rated from 0-100. Then you have skills on the gun. These are things that are exactly in wow. Just under different names. The only thing that is different here is the perspective on how you play. It involves you more. 2. Expansions that overwrite the previous. That's exactly what TTK is doing. It's out dating the older stuff and moving on to the new. Old content is for the most part staying untouched and new content is being added. The levelling not system has totally changed. This expansion does exactly what you claim all MMOS do. This is why people are getting into a stink. This game by its very nature, core and being is an mmo. The people that don't accept this are the ones that seem to have the problem. If you compare wow and this there aren't many differences save the perspective.

Nobody will move on and it will cause power creep. I think that TTK weapons will be cool ,but 99% of people will still Fatebringer ,BlackHammer, Ghorn if we don't make them, which will ruin the experience for people who want to move on.

            • They dont replace them with better gear. Each dlc has worse weapons, but more hype. Everyone says these new weapons will be much stronger but they dont know that. Theyre the same people who said screw ascending fatebringer before HoW came out, got HoW weapons, and quickly ascended their Fatebringer. TTK has cooler looking weapons but with the removed/nerfed perks like perfec balance, field scout etc (all the good ones) youre going to have refill magazine on super and single point sling etc on most of your guns. Everyone will have hidden hand or somethinf because there will be very few useful perks. But you cant reroll so you pretty much have crappy weapons. Plus their theme of having everything that upgrades your gun have a downside also. I dont care about ascending weapons. If there was a hand cannon just like fatebringer in TTK then fatebringer could -blam!- off for all i care. But they wont give us good weapons like that.

You are 100% wrong that Destiny weapons mean more to a player than Weapons in an mmo. Legendary weapons are still sought after to collect in WoW Many people spent months grinding out one Legendary even if it was already obselete because it means that much to them. Destiny in an MMO Hybrid bottom line. Also Yes Destiny expansions do happen faster than mmo Expansion but around the same rate as a Tier in WoW which is where most gear is phased out not during the expansion.

                • Tbh I love my VoC, Found Verdict, Corrective measure, Fang, Comedian. But why would I want to use the same gun? There will be many guns to come that will be near photo copies, to other cool combinations. Also since reforging is a thing, you could even get the same style rolls as other current guns. Like currently the Fulcrum with LitC and Final round(Last round?), Smallbore as a miniature Hawkmoon. But my opinion is my opinion.

                • i agree with everything you said. good luck trying to convince some people here the logic of which you espouse. WE ARE ALL EXCITED FOR NEW GUNS! Noone here has EVER said they wanted to use the same guns for the entire game... I fail to see the logic how having MORE guns to choose from is bad. We could have new AND old weapons. MORE VARIETY!!!!!!! Please I defy anyone to explain to me coherently how more variety of loot in a loot based game is bad.
