I see both sides of the argument. The rush of getting your first exotic is something i will remember for a while(Plan C). And to keep using the year 1 weapons would be great, but you also have to look at the other side that people would like to see new content. So have an option to upgrade, i say if you want to then fine. But you cant have these weapons being better than the "new" ones. Maybe have some perk take a hit when you upgrade? Like i can bring the damage up but your stability or impact ect will go down? Im just looking forward to finding that new exotic from the next DLC.
