Bungie and people claim that Destiny isn't an MMO, but what actually makes it not an MMO? The only reason that Bungie doesn't want to be tied to the label of "MMO" is because the genre of action bar, point and click type MMOs is slowly dying, and doesn't want to be thrown into the category of a "WoW in space." Desinty has most, if not all the elements that constitute an MMO. Raids, dungeons (strikes), quests, gear progression, loot drops, LFG chat (3rd party destinylfg.com), pvp, classes, talent trees (sub classes)... These are all key elements that make up any MMORPG. The only thing you could argue that makes it not an MMO is that you are never really playing with a "massive" group of people. But that doesn't rule out the fact that you do actually play with a massive amount of people through playing crucible, strikes, and any group activity you find over destinylfg.com. It's no different that finding a group over trade chat in wow to go do a raid, or joining a guild (clan) with scheduled events such as raids, trials runs, or anything else.
What most people like yourself don't understand is that in games such as this, there exists something called a power creep. If they keep all weapons relevant, then they would have to keep making more and more powerful weapons in order to make them appealing enough to use to a point where weapons would just become ridiculously overpowered. If you want to compete at the highest level or be at the most optimal level of play, you are going to use the best thing. So how can you warrant using different weapons if they can't keep making them more powerful than what you already have? Why would you put yourself at the disadvantage (if not just messing around like NLB'ing in crucible)? That's precisely why these old weapons need to become obsolete when clearing new content. In Deej's interview he said that VOG weapons will still be usable in VoG etc... So they won't even be completely useless.
If anything, Destiny has FAR more weapon choices than most other MMOs with all the different weapon perks you can roll on different types of weapons. This, along with another weapon type being added to the game, plus sidearms being an actual weapon type other than two guns, PLUS class specific weapons, there will be plenty of different weapon options for you. Saying "keeping existing gear relevant is the ONLY way to keep any sort of gear diversity in Destiny" is just a really ignorant statement.
