Not true. See I had stopped playing 7 months ago before TBD was out, due to boredom. About 1 and a half weeks in I found the remaining 6 chests I was missing, finally beat Atheon on hard and just finished Crota on hard on Tuesday. Now all I have left is to level up my best weapons to 365, and BOOM! My friends and I will take on Skolas. And I got 32 days to do it in, so this should be no issue obtaining.
