I think the biggest gripe is the promised customization. By ditching all old gear, everyone looks the same again by being forced to use the new gear to stay relevant. If we were able to keep our characters looking the way we want especially after the long grind to do so then we should be able to. I imagine if we could apply old weapon or armor skins to new gear there would be less dissent. Some MMOs offer this and it is the direction I think Destiny should take if they do decide to force people to acquire new gear in the upcoming expansions to proceed forward with light levels or whatever method of advancement.
