• Just watched it and with the role of light vs our levels I think there is still room for us to not be level 34. Look at it this way, we have 2 levels one is our base level 20 the other is our light level 168 which in the current game replaces base level He says our level won't change, sure but since they separate the two in ttk it would not be wrong if we went in at level 20 because our base level would be unchanged. Our light level would also stay the same Since they are upgraded differently we could still have 20 levels to gain even though we are effectively doing the same damage and have the same defense we have now due to how light levels work So for example VoG hard, we CAN run that at base level 20 because that will no longer dictate how much damage we deal and take. VoG hard won't be a base level 30 raid anymore but instead a LIGHT level 120 raid that we run at base level 20 and light level 120 So what I'm saying is we COULD still have 20 base levels to go while maintaining our same damage output and defensive ratings Essentially we won't notice a change except in our base level number but since activities will be off of a suggested light level we can still do everything we have but would still have from levels 20-40 to level up

  •
Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article. There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone. Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity: "Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience. Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views! IMPORTANT For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.
How could that work? I have 3 34s but what if I put on blue gear right before TTK just for laughs? You're going to start at 20. BUT, your light level on your gear still matters. That means level 34 light gear will still do as much damage/defense as it did before so you can still do Crota Hard, POE 35 etc.

  • Watch the interview. DeeJ never said anything about light level transferring to player level. He said "you're good to go." Light level depends on what gear you are wearing at a given time. It's impossible to transfer this to player level. You will be level 20.

  • Your light level isn't fixed. That could never work. Are they going to send out a warning telling everyone to equip their highest level gear before TTK?

Light level is being removed, light is now going to be how effective you are damage wise, if you took the armor off and got locked at say 20 your level would probably be to low to even enter the raid (unless they are reworking them also.)

  • Light level is not gone, it's just not tied to player level. Activities will have light level suggestions, not player level requirements. This was all in the interview.... Crota Hard will still have a recommended Light Level of 32 which you will still have, even if your player level is 20.

  • I expect light level is being removed, light is not being removed just its affect on level hence light level instead of just being called light. eg it will be suggested light XYZ. rather than suggested light level because we now will be level bla with light amount bla? They may change the raid requirements, it might now be level 32 required suggested light amount 1100 or something? Anythings possible. Above is purely opinion until the release we don't know so cannot actually confirm.

  • Well, DeeJ said in the interview that activities will have suggested light requirements so that's not really speculation. Light Level isn't going anywhere. 168 light is still light level 34 it's just that it doesn't have anything to do with player level.

Listen to him in the interview, he says light is still important, he doesn't say light level talking in future tense, light is likely changing so its value is different as it is being separated from what level you currently are. Old gear might not change but the new gear is likely different hence white or green stuff can be better than the old purples. Again I can only go on what I have heard from Deej in his interview. Below is the one im talking about, you want to look at around the 4 minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cNIu0fMtMg
