Honestly I think their whole ascension thing was a mistake and they only did it to quiet part of the players. New weapons will never perform exactly the same as the ones we're use to because their simply just not the same, just something we'll have to get use to. Now as for it being better or worse... It's really just perks that cause that as base damage is increased so that makes it "better" but the perks are what give them that slight edge. But I don't think they really make that drastic of a change. That being said... I do partly agree with you. So, sadly, given bungvisions track record so far it's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt so to speak in hopes of weapons actually making up for what we have to give up. But we just have to wait and see if they can actually deliver :/
