The small settlement of Palamon was very quiet this time of the night, most kids tucked in their beds and sound asleep, allowing their parents to have a place of respite from them, the large saloon at the end of town where all of the people gathered to talk about most things political, surprisingly, no one ordered any alcoholic beverages, most of them were all gathered around a table watching a card game, how easily interested they are in such simple tasks may confuse a foreigner, they all kept watching until a man wearing a long, tattered cloak along with a hood covering half of his face walked into the saloon, an olive colored coat covering his chest and his tan cargo pants full of ammo for a standard Tex Mechanica handcannon, he walked over to the bartender and sat down in a stool.
"I'm looking for a man, his name is Dredgen Yor, have you seen him?" He asked, his voice echoing through the room as if it was asking everyone, they all stopped their current activity and stared at the man. "Hmm, Dredgen Yor, I've heard of him, why are you looking for him?" The bartender answered as he set a few shot glasses on the table, the man then flashed his revolver at the bartender, it was very peculiar in design, the top of the gun mostly gold with the words 'Tex Mechanica' inscribed on the barrel.
"I thought Jaren Ward was dead, you can't be him!" The bartender denied as he gave the man a stare as cold as ice. "True, I'm not Jaren Ward, I inherited this weapon from him." The man explained as he holstered the revolver and took his hood off of his head, two hazel eyes staring back at the bartender, who almost flinched as he saw that he wasn't the only one staring. "The name's Shin Malphur by the way." The man added. "Now, you say you know about this man, Dredgen Yor."
"Yes, I don't know of his current location though, he's everywhere and can be anywhere." The bartender informed as a man with a Tex Mechanica recreation of an old lever action rifle bursted through the door."Put your hands up, this is a robbery." He demanded, Shin stood up with his revolver still in it's holster and he glared at the man, what seemed like hours passed before they spoke a word. "Well, I'd prefer it if we all shot you." Shin remarked with a deadpan tone as he drew the revolver and aimed at the man's head, who quickly aimed his rifle at Shin. "Who says that I will comply? I might shoot you in the back when you're not looking." The robber commented. "Thanks for the advice, but sadly your life has come to an end." Shin asserted as he fired a round into the man's head, a bullet firing from his weapon and grazing Shin's shoulder. "Well that'll be all." Shin concluded. "Make sure to get the rifle, one of you might need it." He then jogged out of the saloon with his revolver in his left hand.
He walked over to the borders of the town and held out his hand, a ghost appeared hovering over his hand as it gave a one-eyed stare at Shin. "I need my Sparrow, now." He ordered, the ghost did a nodding motion with his full body and a sparrow appeared at his side. He got on the sparrow and activated the boosters, sending him barreling at high speeds away from the city.
A few hours later he can across a small canyon with a makeshift wooden bridge allowing crossing of the canyon, he slowed his Sparrow to a halt and got off of the vehicle. "This is the place, I detect something dark here." His ghost piped in as he unholstered his weapon and spun the fully loaded cylinder before pulling the hammer. "Great, thanks for the info." Shin replied with a slightly worried tone of voice, he knew this would be his last stand. He knew that he would be a legend soon forgotten and that feeling intensified with every step and every gust of wind until he reached the bridge, before he could do anything else a bullet pierced his back, it stung like it was coated in poison, Shin reeled forwards and nearly had his feet swept out from under himself.
"What was that?" He winced as he attempted to remove the bullet, he successfully dug it out with his gloved hands and examined it, it wasn't a bullet, but a thorn, he examined it before throwing it off the bridge and leaving it to plummet into the canyon below."Of course, it's a round from the Thorn, Dredgen is close." He assured before regaining his form and scanning the area, a man wearing a grey hunter cloak with multiple Hive-like features on his armor was standing where his sparrow was.
"Seems like it is you then." The man said in a raspy voice, his face hidden by the helmet on his head, Shin quickly aimed his weapon at the man. "Who are you?" Shin barked, he was sure that it was Yor, he licked his lips and grinned, awaiting a response. "Jaren's killer, that's all."the man boasted as if it was an accomplishment, he wasn't worth of any titles or trophies, only death. "And now, another trophy." He added as he blinked behind Shin and kicked him to the ground, Shin rolled to the left upon hitting the ground, barely dodging a shot from Yor's weapon, Shin quickly regained his stance and fired a few rounds at Yor, who blinked out of sight again, this time, right in front of Shin. "You call yourself a hero? But does that really matter, we're both the same, you are corrupted by your bias." Dredgen asked as he kicked Shin in the face, Yor took the opening as an advantage and shot a round through Shin's chest.
"Any last words Mr. Malphur?" Dredgen Inquired as he aimed at Shin's head, Shin aimed the revolver at Yor's head, catching him off guard. "Your's... Not mine." Shin immediately pulled the trigger of his weapon as Yor was caught off guard as a bullet passed through his head, Yor had no time to react and Shin slowly stood up and walked over to the dying man.He took the helmet off of the man's head as a look of shock went over his face. "J-Jaren?" Shin stammered as he stared at the man. "Yes... I guess it's time for you to kill me, some father and adopted son relationship this has been." Jaren choked out as he moved the barrel of Shin's revolver to his head. "I guess it has been." Shin repeated as he held back his own tears." Goodbye, father." He pulled the trigger of his revolver, a final bullet ending Jaren's life, his now lifeless eyes staring into Shin's, who kneeled next to the corpse and let tears roll down his face and onto the bridge. To this day, Shin has never told anyone the identity of Dredgen Yor, which would be his father's dying wish, to preserve his honor and prestigious family name.
