That's probably the closest ting to a "transmog" system that I think could actually work in Destiny.
I feel like it would be to easy to do, though; players would be encouraged to run older, easier raids to do it, instead of running the new ones.

Though, there should be a max number of ascensions, or make it super expensive to keep people from spamming the crap out of it with easier drops like oversoul.

EDIT: Make the requirement for the combo be a MAXXED out weapon. Then player wouldn't be able just run the raid and get weapons, they'd still have to work hard to level them all up first. Problem solved.
