  • Valus Ta'arc: Dossier Although little is known about the initial Cabal assault that destroyed Golden Age Humanity on Mars, it is noted that, amongst their leadership, was a gigantic Cabal leader that struck fear into and ended the lives of the best Martian generals. That Cabal was Valus Ta'arc, who would later become the greatest military threat the City has ever faced. Interestingly, "Valus Ta'arc" is not (as we know them) the infamous Cabal's name. "Valus" is the rank he holds and "Ta'arc" is the clan he was born from. This name essentially means "Leader of the Ta'arc" and marks him as the head of the Ta'arc clan. In terms of physical capability, Valus Ta'arc is a freak; few Cabal (even other Valus) reach such size and strength. Considering that a Cabal's size corresponds with his age, it can be assumed Valus is one of the most veteran leaders on Mars, having already been huge at the time of the Collapse and growing since. Like his size, Valus' position is also unusual. He has been shown to be a mighty tactician and warrior on the ground (enough to warrant the rank of Valus and his own personal Land Tank) but is only shown in the company of the Sky Burner legion, implying some past connection with the Cabal air force or space marine corps. It could be theorised that Ta'arc was the Cabal fleet's leader, but has been forced to ground either by desperation or bloodlust. Valus' military career is one of intense violence as his attacks on Mars captured the most ground of all the Cabal leaders. Among his list of accomplishments are the original Sacking of Freehold, the repression of the Vex (once thought to be unbeatable) on Mars and the wholesome destruction and reclamation of Freehold from Holborn's Host. Despite his personal might, tactical genius and aerial support, Valus Ta'arc has been unable to progress any further than Mars due to the inadequacies of his own troops. The Sand Eaters and Blind Legion are both bogged down and demoralised, barely surviving attacks by Vex and Guardians, while he has had his command both challenged (in the case of Valus Tra'ug who disobeyed orders) and failed (in the cases of his lieutenants and the Psion Flayers who continue to make little progress on either rooting out invading Guardians or destroying Earth by throwing Phobos at it). Unfortunately for him, the slow speed of both Cabal in general and his Land Tank make them unmoving targets for Guardians (particularly Hunters) who are unaffected by the tactics that once worked so well on Golden Age Humans. Valus Ta'arc and his lieutenant's deaths have left a vast void in the Cabal leadership and dealt another (possibly final) blow to the Cabal's confidence.
