I understand your perspective, it makes a lot of sense. However
there must be a counterargument somewhere
Destiny is a living game that has been receiving consistent updates and hotfixes over the past year, and that is because it goes beyond the scope of just being an fps where everything is released at once and the devs stamp it with their seal of approval before calling it a day. Sure, destiny is not an mmo, that's a fair argument to make and I personally agree with it, but to make a game last 10 years, the developers need to push people to actually play new content for new gear, it just makes sense (jafeel?). TTK is not designed to be a sequel to the game, we know that, but Destiny doesn't have a sequel. With most mmos, there's a place and a time for the story to go, and destiny is different because it actually doesn't have a storyline that's already been set (by which I mean the game can't physically expand on something that hasn't happened yet). Bungie may have a plan for the story that we don't know, but regardless of that, the gear makes the player play. Without rewards to earn the game would be utterly pointless past year 1. Now I'm not saying you should scrap everything and just work for new stuff, but there is no reason to defend why your guns should be upgradable. Think of it also as a story expansion: When you explore newer places, you get newer gear that outlevels your old gear. it just makes sense If everyone could upgrade their old stuff there would be so many different mechanics and weapons that were being used in the places of the newer guns Bungie took time to develop. They want to see their hard work mean just as much as our dedication to the game. And finally, I have to disagree with your remarks about guns giving a player experience. Guns in destiny are stat sticks. You choose certain weapons over others in events because of what their perks are or how much of a stat they have. I don't think I ever played a raid with a crucible weapon because they simply aren't designed for that activity. Guns provide players with the tools they need to complete activities to earn more rewards. TL;DR You make good points, but the benefits of upgrading old Legendaries is greatly outweighed by the benefits of not being able to. Imo.....

 •
[...] but to make a game last 10 years, the developers need to push people to actually play new content for new gear [...] TTK is not designed to be a sequel to the game, we know that, but Destiny doesn't have a sequel.
You make good counterpoints, but this (which seems to be the crux of your argument) is entirely wrong, which makes them all but void. Another huge reason people need to stop comparing Destiny to MMOs like WoW is because Destiny is going to have sequels. This game isn't going to last 10 years; the franchise is. When 'Destiny 2' is released, Bungie will have ample opportunity to re-design and re-balance the sandbox because its a sequel, just like Halo 2 deviated notably from Halo: CE, as did Halo 3 and Reach. As you said, TTK is not a sequel. It is a DLC for 'Destiny 1'. :P

 • Right, I guess there's some speculation here though because your character is supposed to transfer between all games, even though there may be a "Destiny 2", I find it hard to believe it will be in a different time frame and setting with totally new reworks. Currently the lore of the game within grimoire only supports past events and current accepted knowledge. Call me a freak but I think a lot of people are taking "Destiny 2" too literally than it should be. It may very well be a sequel, but I doubt it will be more than an oversized expansion that gives us more insight on the game and experience more of the play world as time continues. Having to start another guardian or character after 2 years would really upset me, as I would imagine a lot of other players who love the game and play it consistently to get better loot. I may have strayed off of your OP a little bit I think it's still within the realm of what you were discussing haha.

 • Despite my comment, I'm actually on the same page as you, haha. I doubt whatever 'Destiny 2' is will change that drastically from OG Destiny, simply because of the kind of investment players put into the gameplay. Also, like you touched on, the story/lore of Destiny doesn't seem to have any serialization behind it, so there's no clear "break" in the story that would lend well to a sequel; it's more fluid, focused on the immediate lore as it's presented to players. I would assume that any sequels would be a chance for Bungie to revamp the engine/upgrade the graphics more so than overhauling the gameplay. I know I really hammered home the whole "sequels are for making changes" approach, but I didn't necessarily mean I think they will make drastic changes. I'm just saying that, if they were going to give them selves a clean slate to work with, they should wait until a sequel to do it. :P

 • Good point. Maybe it'll just end up on next gen with the new title too...

 • Upgrading old legendary weapons broadens the weapon field so we'd be less likely to get killed by the same weapon a lot or always use the same ones... If they could just keep the old weapons up at max damage as well as the new ones it would make the game better because of all the choices players could make on weapons and fate bringer isn't something people can throw on me cause i dont have one

 • Yeah it would be interesting. I guess I just don't know how I feel about people throwing aside the new guns before they try them. I'm a collector of the raid gear and early weapons myself but if I'm fighting bigger badder enemies I want bigger badder guns designed for those enemies.

 • I'm not throwing aside anything, though! I agree with you, and I want new gear as much as anyone, believe me. I just don't see any logical reason why that means I have to use only new gear. It'll just mean that everyone will start using the same gear again, because the pool of worthwhile gear is going to be small, again.

 • I think it's more of an incentive thing, bungie knows that of people can use old gear, not as many people would want to get new gear. I guess well have to wait and find out haha

 • No one here ever said that we don't want to use the new guns. I love seeing what I might be able to add to my armory with each expansion, but I need to be able to decide that for myself. Guns are as much a personal expression of play-style as anything else in this game, so the idea of anyone deciding to change the nuances of how I play defeats [what Bungie claims is] the purpose of this whole game.
