I don't think I need to tell anybody that there's been a lot of salt thrown around recently by folks lamenting the fact that they had to "earn" their Haller Haller Get Gjaller, and now anybody can just buy one.
The thing is though, by definition, if anybody that had one from a drop did actually earn it, they did so only by running the one activity that granted them the drop (and by extension getting to whatever level let them run that activity). That could have been the very first thing they had ever run that could grant you an exotic, and they'd have landed on the Jellyhorn. Nothing else affected the chances, and any belief to the contrary illustrates the Gambler's Fallacy.
That led me to thinking, what did those of us who got Ballerhorn in a drop really do to "earn" the (until recently) rarest of guns?
So without further ado, I'd like to be the first to recount the legendary tale of how I "earned" my GGhorn.
Comment with your "epic tale" and let's see just how hard we all had to work! ;)
I hopped into a 5 man Normal Atheon fight and died during it.
#Gjallarhorn #IEarnedIt
tl;dr ITT share stories of any low effort "feats" you accomplished that gave you a Gjallarhorn drop, demonstrating the lack of a correlation between effort and reward, thus disproving that RNG counts as "earning" any more than Xûr does.
Edit: Now with 20% more quotation marks so everyone gets the joke
Edit 2: It occurs to me that in the original post I failed to mention the fact that for some, their YOLOhorn dropped after a particularly difficult feat, such that they really do feel that they earned theirs. My point is not to lessen the sense of accomplishment anyone felt after acquiring their Yellerhorn, but rather to highlight the fact that due to RNG, many of us "earned" ours in really easy/silly ways, and to invite the people who are sad/angry/disappointed at everyone's favorite Splatoon cosplayer to think about whether RNG really qualifies as earning something.
Cheers, all, and welcome to the Wolfpack!
Edit 3: Alterations to second paragraph regarding the description of what anyone who got a Gjally drop did that directly resulted in that drop. Also added tl;dr

Funny story.... I called it....I bought my Ghorn after months and months and months of running all raids/nightfalls/etc on (at the time was my 2 characters)......and then it drops for the first time on one of my nightfall runs this week. My friend and I burst out laughing....because this embodies my luck in Destiny.

i earned the hell out of it when xur came last weekend lols

People who get Gjallarhorn as RNG earn it because they put time into doing that activity or even the game its self.
-
If you bought it then you "earned it" there is no where in this game that states you are promised a ghorn for doing anything.. There is a chance at it dropping so there for you don't earn it..you do your thorn bounty now that is "earning it" cause that is promised for completing the bounty!
-
The problem with the "earned it" philosophy is that other activities such as Nightfalls are not remotely challenging. The people who look down on "xurners" are the first to bitch when there is no burn on a Nightfall, it takes more than ten minutes to complete, and doesn't give them exactly what they want. Access through Xur is balanced in the context of trivial Nightfalls, gorgon chests, and cheeseball raids such as Crota's End.
-
Dose it really matter how you obtain any weapon? You either get one or don't. Either from RNG or xur. Either way you put time in on crusable or from grinding for coins or any other way to obtain it. It just comes down to time spent and luck.
-
