Can we drop the term "meta" already?

I'm making this thread to address something I see quite often in relation to gaming. The term "meta". For those who don't know, the term meta is used when talking about what's hot in a game right now, it refers to what everyone is using currently, what's popular. In discussions about the PvP side of Destiny the last few months, I've come across numerous threads on these forums where players will be voicing their opinions on what they think should be changed or giving advice to those aiming to become better, and they repeatedly speak of "the current meta" and "the way this current meta works", and more often than not they're met with people asking what they're talking about, what that means, or asking if they could explain better. From a neutral perspective, it appears the main reason people use the term "meta" is to sound more intelligent when discussing the game, but being that there are far more casual players and even hardcore players out there in the community who aren't "in the know" when it comes to the most current terminology, using that term is often met with more confusion and questions than it is with understanding. That said, there is a simple solution to this that can bring about more smooth discussion that everyone from all sides can understand, and that solution is dropping the term "meta" entirely. For the overall benefit of the community and contributing to the conversation, I'm proposing we should drop "meta", and just say "trend" or "phase", because it still means the same thing, but It's far easier to understand, and you still get your point across. I've expressed what I had to say, now what do YOU think? I'm interested in hearing feedback from the community and getting your opinions =============================== EDIT1: Look at all those replies, glad to see there was a nice turn out for this topic here, trolls included! Edit2: The obligatory "TheGreatNike appeared!" mention Edit3: I've seen so many posts in this thread about what meta does or doesn't mean that it kind of blows my mind. Here's a few! FelicityHeaton: "To me meta is just a piece of code in the header of a web page that I've coded or am coding..." AMPEDtoKILL: "Meta is a term used for many RPG's. Its meaning, in a broad sense, is that players will adjust their characters in a way that they wouldn't normally do because of outside influences." Normal: "Meta by itself these days refers to something being self referential. E.g. A movie about making a movie is "meta." Meta in my head has always meant a higher order. Such as meta-data, being a catalog of headers, that in turn carry their own data. MaraSov: Meta doesn't even mean what these people use it for. It's stupid.

  • I actually recently learned that word. Before Destiny, I didn't know any gaming terms like nerf or buff and things like that.

  • The term "meta" is currently the meta on the forums. We can't just undo the meta as it relates to the meta by dropping the term "meta"

Meta in the context of gaming basically means talking about the game within the game sort of. Technically it would be the game talking about itself which makes no sense but I agree the way people are using it after hearing smartass youtubers is in a way that sounds like a trend, like "the trend is to use two shot kill handcannons or low time to kill weapons and this meta is ruining destiny"

      • I've used the term meta for a decade, mostly when referring to the Magic the Gathering meta. I've come to know it as the current field you're likely to run into (ie, Raffinity meta), and won't stop using it because some poor chud doesn't know the word. The current meta is Thorn and shotguns. Seems pretty simple to me.

          • To me meta is just a piece of code in the header of a web page that I've coded or am coding... So because that context is firmly in my mind, when I see people talking about it, I just think of header information. :)

                      • I disagree with the premise that the term is used to appear more intelligent. The term is used because it is a four letter word that quickly describes a very complicated concept - a concept which goes beyond "trend" or "phase". If people need that concept explained to them in order to participate in a discussion, that is not a problem, that is just the natural spread and advancement of knowledge of that concept. As for this being "current terminology" that is just silly. Metas exist in many fields. Understanding the meaning of the prefix "meta" is something that I believe that we should expect every Western educated English speaker to have learnt by or around the age of 16. Considering the fact that the word is taken straight from ancient Greek - we can hardly call it "current" or imply that it is a new addition to our language.

Meta is a term used for many RPG's. Its meaning, in a broad sense, is that players will adjust their characters in a way that they wouldn't normally do because of outside influences. For instance when thorn was discovered to just demolish in PvP, many player wanted to do the same with that weapon, hence creating a new meta. That's what meta is, its been a term for a while in gaming.

To be completely honest. The current use of the word meta is somewhat baffling to me. Meta by itself these days refers to something being self referential. E.g. A movie about making a movie is "meta." Meta in my head has always meant a higher order. Such as meta-data, being a catalog of headers, that in turn carry their own data. I had always assumed that when people say "the current meta." They were referring to the second tier numbers that Bungie was looking at... As in hand cannons are at the top of the current meta-data numbers. It's times like this when I realize I speak an older form of English than kids do. I don't see how meta could be interpreted as trend without some convoluted reasoning. Edit: After reading through this thread a bit. It makes a lot more sense. I do see how you could interpret it as trend... But it's really not the right word, the meta(game) itself is trending, it's not a trend itself. When I was playing Marathon on a LAN, no one ever said anything about "meta" when we all used rocket launchers on Thunderdome. So I'm iffy about how it's "been used for years." Though, 1995 is probably considered pre-historic to some people. Edit 2: added video of the Marathon multiplayer in question. That's Aleph One footage too... Back in the day we didn't even have reticles.

                            • I wasn't aware of what it meant, haven't used it though so my conscience is clean but have seen it used (mostly nerf threads regarding thorn)

That's actually not true. Instead of calling for this pseudo ban of a word (prescriptive linguistics is ridiculous anyway), maybe research its meaning and adopt it into your lexicon. I recommend looking up "meta gaming", "power gaming" and "min/maxing". Expand your horizons, don't wear blinders and definitely don't try to make everyone else wear blinders either.
