Raid materials are exchanged for MoL... That's their only relevance, that's why the speaker exchanges them.

Oh, I see your point. Well, you can exchange then for a pretty good amount of glimmer (100 shards/energy to reach cap). And I'm sure motes of light will continue being useful in the same ways they've always been, and in new ways.
