I may play my first raid (along with a staggering percentage of the community) and will without question have an easier time with the nightfalls I often struggle through solo, or with a single friend. I truly hope Bungie implements OPTIONAL matchmaking. It would make the game something totally different for me.

Pretty much. And my LFG experiences have not be flawless by any means. I've had people quit or go AFK in groups I made via LFG as well. These are not problems specific to normal matchmaking, which seems to be an argument Bungie is making. And if you want to use LFG sites, you still can.
