So once the game has taken stock of your Y1 exotics and unlocked the blueprint for the select ones that have a Y2 counterpart... you don't need them anymore. Essentially, Bungie has said "We're finally giving you much more space to store things, while at the same time obsoleting all your gear so that there's no reason for you to store any of it."

Thy never said Y1 exotics weren't able to be upgraded again. They only showed some getting new TTK versions. Until they straight up say "Y1 exotics can't be upgraded with exotic shards I will believe they are upgradable.
