From what I saw on the stream was the way your light level now impacts your gear is beneficial. The level difference now won't have the same impact in the future expansion. You'll up your light level to up your defense and offense capabilities. The better gear you get will reduce the amount of damage you take and increase the amount of damage you dish out.
