What keeps up?
Don't get me wrong, I too see some trends in the industry that worry me.
But Destiny was a lot of hours for 100 bucks.... sure, it would've been a better game if they released a bit later. But that's also a problem of todays marketing. In the design phase everybody has big ideas and most games have to cut back. (too expensive, not enough time, doesn't play well, not possible, etc...).
The big error with destiny was that the making-of was too well documented, designers voiced their ideas, they made a demo for E3, packing everything in it, they had to date and people expected that everything they heard and saw will be in the game. Then reality set in and Bungie delayed the game and they also had to cut stuff that just couldn't be finished in time.
This happends to a lot of games and has happend for many many years. But the hype-train and marketing is worse than ever before and the consumer is more demanding.
The one thing which pisses me off it this damage-controlling way of communicating. I prefer honest language, like: we nerf gjally, it's OP! we leave some weapons behind because they are a pain to balance... stuff like that..
