They'll bring those exotics forward, watch. It will be part of a DLC package. Why give a feature away when people will pay for it. Then they can pretend they listened to feedback (like the did with Etheric Light) and reveal a new upgrade mechanic, available with the next DLC. That way people don't freak out about cutting stuff from game to sell it later, and they look like good people for listening to the fans. Win/Win.
